i love these ideas and appreciate the impressive amount of work that went into researching all of it. ironically, i am right now (as in…NOW, today) removing heavily patterned tile from the bathrooms in my 1970’s “spanish” (subdivision…ranch) house. the tiles have held up beautifully for 42 years, but yowza. living with the patterns on floors and walls day after day can be crazy-making over time. plus, the colorways are self-limiting — the tile demands center stage. i will replace the patterned tiles with plain cement tiles and go crazy with towels.

Backsplash is a hot topic in home décor today, and we can see why. Nothing can enliven a room in quite the same way as backsplash, especially cement tile backsplash. In a kitchen, cement tile backsplash can simply serve as a pop of color, something subtle and classic to compliment your existing style, or the statement piece your kitchen is missing. Think of what a fresh feel our Nola Pink cement tile could bring to your kitchen. It could be your cement tile statement piece! You could even try open shelving to really accentuate your new cement tile and catch the eye of your guests. We are thrilled that the show used our Bouquet II pattern in an episode of this season’s show. The episode is titled “Arched Mediterranean Kitchen” (Season 11, Episode 2) and follows a couple as they get a complete kitchen renovation. Our handmade cement tile is used on the kitchen backsplash to create a unique centerpiece for the space. The Bouquet cement tile pattern blends in perfectly with the new kitchen’s Mediterranean theme.
Cutting cement tiles takes a bit of extra patience because they’re harder and thicker than the ceramic tiles I’m used to working with.  I found that cutting them face-up allowed for fewer chips on the face of the tile.  When cutting these beauties, you have to be aware of the pattern.  I cut the right and left edges off of 4 tiles.  Then I laid these 3″ strips into the backsplash and called my work done.
Cement tiles are typically 8 by 8 inches and run about $15 to $29 per square foot. Rustico Tile & Stone’s price range for standard 8×8 tiles are $9-$17/sf. Installation would be the same as ceramic or porcelain tile, with one big difference. Cement tile has to be sealed with penetrating sealer after is has been set but before grouting. The sealer will protect the front facade of the tile from absorbing the grout material.

in 2009 when artist and designer, deborah osburn began her blog, ‘tile envy’, she did so because no one else was talking about tile at the time. ‘tile envy’ quickly garnered an avid following and when readers started to ask how to source the unique artisan tiles she was featuring, deborah found herself launching an online tile shop in 2012 aptly named clé (pronounced 'clay') tile. selling tiles solely online seemed audacious at a time when tile stores were still deeply rooted in the showroom experience, however, architects, designers and design-savvy customers proved they were happy to have access to a wider array of decorative tiles and the online boutique took off.
While you’re putting cement tile on the walls, don’t forget about the laundry room! Beautiful laundry rooms are not just for the people of Pinterest (or Jamie and Morgan in our video about installing Erizo Blue cement tile, which you can see on our Installation page. Jamie and Morgan used Erizo Blue cement tile as their pop of color!). You could use our cement tile as a lovely accent behind your laundry room sink and washer/dryer: an unexpected statement piece to liven what, in most homes, is a very boring room.
"We create tiles in collaboration with individual artists and with artisans from around the world. We are perpetually on the lookout for new finishes and it often takes at least a good year (or more) to bring a line to market . We were the first to really promote the Moroccan tile, zellige in the US. It took a while for people to embrace the imperfections but now it is one of the hottest items we sell."

One of the most classic cement tile designs is the intricate floral or Moorish pattern. This look dates back to the early 20th century and is just as popular today. The options for this type of traditional pattern are endless, ranging from colorful and bright to serene and neutral. Depending on the style of your home, you can add a unique flair to your kitchen with backsplash cement tile.
but what if I want to use a contrasting or dark grout? using a contrasting or dark grout isn’t impossible, however, it will require GREAT CARE. your installer will need to be extra careful with applying his grout release. next, a test patch should first be attempted to insure that the grout release and the contractor’s application is working. if not, he may need to either finger grout- using his finger to fill the joints, or use a grout bag to assist filling the joints. either procedure will insure that the dark grout stays off the tile surface. but they obviously take a great deal of skill and care.

The Erica Tanov exclusive collaboration with Clé Tile is a modern take on an historic tile that, over the past 150 years, has been referred to by dozens of names including encaustic cement tiles, concrete tiles, hydraulicos, and cuban tiles. These alluring objects have stood the test of time and have echoed their beauty across many continents. Clé creates one of the finest cement tiles in the world, and this quality still permeates a surface which is muted, varied, matte and silky. Cement tiles' characteristically variegated colors make them one of today's most sought-after tiles for both walls and floors, indoors and out.
"We are particularly fond of our Eastern Earthenware line that is made by a sixth generation tile maker in Vietnam - a country that has a long legacy of tile making. The tiles are wood fired which means that there is a lot of variation in the color and texture for each batch. No one tile is identical to another but rather a medley of hues. Getting people to understand how special these differences are has not only been an education but when clients finally get it, they are also completely enamored and willing to think of tile not just as a uniform, monochrome surface but to consider it more as a piece of art."
we continue to expand our offerings and this year, 2018, is no exception with the launch of over twenty new products. we continue to collaborate and create artisan and designer tiles but we are also digging deep and exploring a myriad of surface materials beyond the world of clay-based products. although clé began solely as an online tile store, six years in, we are opening a studio, showroom and a guild where we will teach young artists how to create artful tile and take the craft to a whole new level.

If you are looking for commercial tile flooring for high-traffic areas, we carry many outstanding lines of commercial-grade tile for the floor (and wall) that is stylish and durable for business, industrial, corporate and retail projects. We have many large format tiles for open areas, as well as smaller formats for creating warmth, while maintaining durability and functionality.
"Creating an emotional connection with the materials is really important as each line has a story that often draws on a long history of experience and tradition. Tile has been used for centuries around the world but here in the U.S. it has been used sparingly and confined mostly to the bathroom and kitchen. Helping people expand their horizons and think of tile in a new way is always one of our goals at clé."

Concrete tiles are available in myriad styles and finishes to suit just about any design theme. Of course, you'll find classic smooth concrete tiles that mimic traditional ceramic. But manufacturers also offer organic textures that replicate natural materials such as wood, bamboo, or stone. And for the more daring, you can find many unusual or novel patterns and finishes, including tire tread imprints, cloud patterns, and metallic finishes. In many cases, tile sizes can be custom made to fit the application and space.

Some tiles are hand-pressed, others machine pressed. The hand-pressed can be more delicate or fragile because the pressing can be inconsistent. I'm not saying all hand-pressed are to be avoided, you can simply get better consistency when they are hydraulically pressed. If you're getting them from a large manufacturer, they are likely hydraulically pressed.
Just eight months after opening its location on Almont Drive in West Hollywood, the high-end tile company LE MOSAISTE decides to take advantage of a vacancy on nearby Robertson Boulevard to move its showroom. The purpose of the move is clear: added visibility and closer proximity to the Pacific Design Center. “We think the new space will allow us to serve the local design community more effectively”, says co-founder Faissel Farhi.
The term encaustic means “to heat or burn in” from an ancient Greek word. Encaustic materials are produced through a process which involves heating to seal in the dyes and clays. Traditional encaustic tiles are made using clay and powdered glazes, and are fired in a coal or wood-fired kiln. The firing process heats the clay and powdered colors to seal in the design and create a hard surface. These types of tiles are technically called ceramic tiles, but many sources and even tile manufacturers have interchangeably referred to them as both ceramic and cement tiles.

Trends come and go; what is popular and beautiful today, is second best tomorrow in the design world. So it’s no surprise if you’re feeling a little skeptical to use patterned cement tiles in your home, and worried that this fad will be yet another passing trend. But cement tiles are here to stay. In fact, they never left. Cement tiles have been used for over 150 years in grand residences and public buildings.
LE MOSAISTE teamed up with interior designer and new neighbor Paul L’Esperance (www.lesperancedesign.com), best known for his award-winning work on the 22 million dollar restoration of The Leland Stanford Mansion. The joint effort took the design of the new showroom into a direction that complements the elegant and organic qualities of the company’s artisan zellige tiles. The idea behind the décor was to pay tribute to the origin of the tiles while hinting at their versatility. The term that comes to mind is “Moroccan modern”.
Then I started telling tile installers my plans. And the response from each of them was the same: A concerned look on their faces, the one that says clear as day, "I need to tread carefully here and be sure this person doesn't make a horrible mistake." The sentiment was the same with each as well: They'd do it if I insisted, but I'd be hearing "I told you so," down the road.
All patterns depicted are available as custom tile using our South Beach Collection color palette. You can ensure availability and choose your own colors with custom tile if your schedule can permit 10-14 weeks for production and delivery. While our custom tile does have a slightly different price schedule, pricing is similar, and sometimes lower with custom tile. Custom tile requires a 50 square foot minimum order (small order fees may apply below 100 square feet).
I used them in this kitchen, above, that was installed in a 1920’s Spanish style renovation. It is still one of my favorites. Note: the floor tiles weren’t properly sealed the first time (if at all, I don’t remember and it wasn’t my contractor) so they got really dirty really fast. I had to have them professionally scrubbed and then resealed but they definitely still had a lot of wear from those couple days of no-sealant days. It actually looks great because its an old house but if you had a new house you might not be so into it.
This 8" x 8" Cement Field Tile in Gray/White transform spaces into works of art. Reminiscent of century-old encaustic tiles, cement tiles have been handcrafted by artisans for decades. The designs and colors create a beautiful and durable surface that is more aesthetically appealing than basic cement or drywall, and more durable and eco-friendly than wood or laminate flooring.
Besides the varying manufacturing processes, you may wonder about the biggest differences between encaustic cement and ceramic tiles and why you would choose one over the other. Encaustic cement tiles and ceramic tiles both come in countless patterns and color combinations. They often feature designs inspired by different cultures and architectural influences. They are also both used in many types of projects, from kitchen backsplashes to floors to outdoor spaces to decorative wall features.

You're not limited to a predetermined color palette as is typical with factory-produced tile. With concrete, you can customize the color of your tiles to blend with your décor, such as choosing a shade that complements the wallpaper in your kitchen. Concrete tile manufacturers offer thousands of color options, ranging from soft natural earth tones to vibrant cherry reds. You can go with a uniform color or add more character by dreaming up a custom color blend. Read more about coloring concrete.
The maintenance requirements for concrete tiles will vary depending on the application and whether the tiles are used on an exterior or interior surface. For example, concrete tiles used as an interior wall cladding will require very little maintenance, while tiles used on a floor or countertop or on an exterior surface exposed to the elements will require regular cleaning and resealing to keep them looking their best. Read these how-to tips for cleaning concrete floors, countertops, and exterior surfaces.

Clarity is important! Please note: we are not responsible  for the accuracy of measuring your project, or for how the materials are utilized. Your tile contractor or building professional is responsible for that. We highly recommend that you communicate clearly, effectively, and often, with your tile contractor and all involved in your tile project design.

It is expected that 2%-3% of your tile arrives damaged (chipped or scratched), since our tiles are primarily handmade, hand picked and hand packed exposing the product to breakage, therefore slight surface issues are standard. The best practice is to order at least 10% more than your project requirements to cover allow for these issues, as well as other breakage during installation.

Items that state "ships within 10-12 weeks" are made to order, with the 10-12 weeks being the production time. We are not able to expedite the production time as each tile is produced by hand one at a time and then requires time to fully cure so they do not break while in transit. After this 10- 12 week period the order will ship from our warehouse and transit time should be 1-7 business days.

When I got to my local tile shop to pick out something in person, I couldn't resist one last look. In my research, I'd learned all about "patina" that develops over time. Patina doesn't sound so bad, even though I know perfectly well from my zinc countertop that patina is sometimes just a nice way of saying it shows every little mark and scuff for years and years until it's old and then and only then is it actually a desirable thing. I admired the cement tiles on display, and asked the consultant working with me about them. Even she didn't want to sell them to me, or to anyone, for that matter.

Cement Kitchen Backsplash will stand strong to the wear and tear of routine life, and maintains its naturality and elegance always.
I would be concerned about staining of the tiles. The reality is that sealing may be necessary periodically and I, personally know how easy it is to say: I'll do it again in a year, but not now. We just had a tile demo in our master bath, and replaced the beautiful, but slightly porous tiles with high end, large format porcelain tiles. The old tiles were in perfect shape, but we got tired of staining and discoloration from things that got dripped on the floor, and mineral deposition in the shower which became impossible to remove. My tiles were not encaustic, but I would be concerned about these same issues if I installed encaustic tiles anywhere but on the walls. Call me lazy, but I want a tile installation that involves minimal maintenance and worry over the long term, and no need for resealing..
The main difference between concrete and ceramic tiles is, unlike ceramic tiles, the design of cement tiles isn’t painted on top of the tile, but is a solid part of the tile itself. Ceramic tiles are made with color pigments on the surface and topped with a glaze. The fact that the design is applied to the top of the tile is what causes ceramic tiles to scratch and fade. The manufacturing process of concrete tiles is what gives them their strength and resistance to the typical wear and tear you see on ceramic tiles.
