as we move into 2017 we wanted to pause to appreciate what an amazing year 2016 has been for clé. we launched a new website, won an interior design best of year award, grew our team (we are now a whopping 20 people), and worked with so many wonderful and talented clients. even though it is quite fitting that a zany encaustic cement tile would be our biggest seller (let's be honest... 2016 was pretty crazy), it has been a wonderful year for clé. so cheers to you and 2016!

If you’re the DIY kind of home or business owner, installing cement tile yourself may be a great option. Tiling a floor is one of the most common DIY projects. While doing it yourself can save money down the road, if you don’t know how to install them properly, concrete tiles won’t add the kind of value you’re hoping for. Cement tiles look incredibly stylish and high-end, but if they are improperly installed and begin to stain or warp over time, or just look uneven, they’ll only end up costing you more money, time, and headaches down the road. Learn how to tile a floor using cement tiles with these tips and professional advice.
if you are using tiles in kitchens, bathrooms, showers, restaurants and lobbies (all high-traffic areas) even after sealing cement tiles- you should expect a degree of patina as your tiles slowly acclimate to their location. if you are not familiar with unglazed surfaces that will age with time (such as limestones, terracottas, marbles etc) and are not a fan of patina, then you may want to select another tile.
Love cement tiles – have them in my guest bath and fireplace surround – but those puppies are hard to seal properly. Make sure you’ve got somebody who knows what they’re doing. In the bathroom, first guy made a giant mess of the job – specialist had to come in, scrape the bad sealer off and reseal – they ended up with a bit more of a rustic, distressed finish, but it works OK with the style of my house (kinda like Emily’s cloent’s kitchen)
we recommend using our unglazed tile grout. our timberwolf is natural grey in color and has the least amount of pigment. steer clear of permacolor grouts that will stain the tile. ideally tile spacing should be set at 1/16 inch - as tight as possible - to keep the pattern flow. for any cement tile we always recommend miracle's 511 porous plus as a sealant.
The craftsman house involved in the project is over 100 years old. It’s a brown shingle craftsman very typical of the local homes and the owners are bringing it back to life little by little. The owners are both wonderful cooks (she’s French so of course!) and spend a lot of time in their well-used kitchen. The home was updated sometime in the 80’s and was ready for a serious face-lift. The clients wanted to incorporate a French/Moroccan style with the architectural elements of a craftsman. We think they succeeded!

First of all, if your tiles are light colored, use a white colored setting material. Similarly, use a darker setter for darker tiles. Install the tiles by following the instructions. Use a wet saw if you need to cut the tiles. Once the tiles are set, clean them with a mop or cloth after 48 hours to get rid of any excessive grout. Make sure you seal your tiles in place with a sealer. In case of cracks, use a concrete patch material that you can find in the stores easily. Fill in the cracks and then, seal them in place.

Clarity is important! Please note: we are not responsible  for the accuracy of measuring your project, or for how the materials are utilized. Your tile contractor or building professional is responsible for that. We highly recommend that you communicate clearly, effectively, and often, with your tile contractor and all involved in your tile project design.
The apparent simplicity of the Rogue Hex encaustic tile is deceptive. Inspired by tessellations, or repeated, close-fitting polygons, the diamonds and triangles on this hexagon tile can be flipped in different directions to create cubes and other geometric designs. Design a chic black-and-white accent wall or entryway floor with timeless style using 8" x 9" Rogue encaustics.

We process container orders with load from 20 feet to high cubed containers. Container order turnaround time may vary, depending on the type of products ordered and it can sometimes take up to four months to deliver.  Certain products take our artisans longer to create, thus extending delivery time. Container orders are shipped directly from Morocco.
if clé cement tiles are pre-polished and pre-sealed, why do I have to use a grout release? clé is pleased to offer cement tiles that are pre-polished and pre-sealed. if you have witnessed the difference in cement tiles without this hand-rubbed finish, you know that clé cement tiles’ smooth finish helps our tiles through transportation blemishes and the first stages of installation care. HOWEVER, grouts are very problematic to cement tiles and taking extra care against staining is essential to success. please be sure to ALWAYS use grout release.

Side note: Using a blade attachment on your power drill makes the job of mixing mortar easy, but be careful. The first few times I tried to mix the mortar, the blade was so powerful that it spun the bucket and slammed it into my shins. In order to keep this from happening again, I wedged the bucket between the front steps and my sneakers. Even then, it took a lot of muscle to hold it in place.
