LE MOSAISTE teamed up with interior designer and new neighbor Paul L’Esperance (www.lesperancedesign.com), best known for his award-winning work on the 22 million dollar restoration of The Leland Stanford Mansion. The joint effort took the design of the new showroom into a direction that complements the elegant and organic qualities of the company’s artisan zellige tiles. The idea behind the décor was to pay tribute to the origin of the tiles while hinting at their versatility. The term that comes to mind is “Moroccan modern”.

Concrete floor tiles get their unmatched durability from their age-old recipe of marble powder, cement, sand, and color pigment that is poured into molds for shaping and then compressed under 2,000 pounds of pressure. They typically aren’t machine manufactured on a large scale, but are each made by hand, by a talented artisan with generational ties to the trade.
When we were looking at cement tiles for our kitchen floor, I had major fear of color, even though we went with blue cabinets (which could be painted any other color). The cement tile floor being our biggest investment in our kitchen renovation, we went safe on color by going black and white (but bold on pattern) knowing it would never truly be out of style or clash with anything else in the room.
First off the rules: I’d warn you to make sure that the style of the house works with the style of the pattern so you aren’t dating yourself in 15 years. There are so many patterns out there now that work with almost every style, but my rule is to keep the tile reminiscent of the style of the house that it is in as that will give the tile longevity in style and design. That means don’t put something super graphic and modern in an antique craftsman.
what colors are suitable for grouting cement tiles? clé always recommends a neutral natural grey (un-pigmented) grout color for all cement tiles. besides being the traditional shade for these historic tiles, the lack of pigment allows for a stain-free installation. another color recommendation is to select the shade that matches closest to the lightest shade in your pattern. CAUTION: many grout manufacturers have begun to pigment their “natural gray” grouts. so be sure your contractor checks with the manufacturer. If there is pigment, your contractor must take care against staining.
Backsplash tiles are usually small to medium sized tiles and can be ceramic, porcelain or cement. They are meant to provide a water-resistant and durable barrier between the wall of the kitchen and all of the messes from cooking. Backsplash tiles help to prevent staining and water damage on the wall, and provide a stylistic touch with the nearly unlimited amount of colors, sizes, shapes, and patterns to choose from.
Browse through our Floor Tiles in our Gallery and you’ll see that encaustic cement floor tiles transform a space, no matter if that space is modern and bold, eclectic and bohemian, or fun and colorful. Whether it’s spills, splashes, or splatters, the kitchen is often on the receiving end of some pretty tough messes. If you’re not careful, you can easily end up with a kitchen covered in food stains and grease spatters, which can lead to a dingy appearance or even lingering odors. In our opinion, the kitchen should be a source of comfort; a place where families and friends can gather around, share a meal, and spend quality time together. We love to see kitchens live up to their potential. That’s why we at Riad love to see our cement tiles being used to create kitchen backsplashes.

i love these ideas and appreciate the impressive amount of work that went into researching all of it. ironically, i am right now (as in…NOW, today) removing heavily patterned tile from the bathrooms in my 1970’s “spanish” (subdivision…ranch) house. the tiles have held up beautifully for 42 years, but yowza. living with the patterns on floors and walls day after day can be crazy-making over time. plus, the colorways are self-limiting — the tile demands center stage. i will replace the patterned tiles with plain cement tiles and go crazy with towels.

Yeah cement tiles might be a strange style for a colonial, but you never know…it could be lovely. Unfortunately my husband had the range hood built and drywalled in a day when I wasn’t at the Dexter House so I don’t have any progress photos for you. He thought a wood hood would be easier to build (like he did at the Ravenna House) but I really wanted the plaster look and in the end, it was really easy to build too. Good luck with your’s – I’d love to see photos!

Being situated in the building right next to the John Varvatos store and across the street from glitzy Italian restaurant Cecconi’s (just south of Melrose & Robertson), the company’s new showroom can certainly be considered prime real estate. Not only is it quite a bit easier to find, but it has more square footage and wall space than its predecessor, allowing for more sample board displays. For close to 20 years the space was home to Trigg Ison Fine Art, one of West Hollywood’s top art galleries.

On the recommendation of the flooring guy at Lowe’s, I bought this sealer. He and I actually had a bit of a difference of opinion. He thought the cement tile was already sealed. I felt pretty certain that it was not. I am glad that I went with my gut because the cement tile backsplash sucked up the sealer like nobody’s business. It took four layers before the tile stopped soaking up the sealer like a desert reptile soaks up rain. (Novice tip: If you have unsealed tile, sealing it prior to grouting is important. The pigment in colored grout can stain unsealed tile.)

Yes! This is awesome…I had such a hard time finding good cement tiles when I was looking last year! I ended up going with some black and white patterned tiles from Overstock for our fireplace and a small backsplash behind our range. I liked the tiles I picked, but honestly it was the free shipping that sold me – when I priced tiles from other suppliers, the shipping was more than the actual tiles.

why do you caution against using permacolor grouts? Permacolor grouts are the newest iteration of grout development. it’s really great for color-fast qualities, however everything that makes it color fast is a demon to your beautiful cement tiles. first, the grout is colored with more intense pigments that will stain any unglazed stone, cement or unglazed tile. second, it is fast drying and less viscous than standard grouts and therefore there is a greater possibility of leaving a grout film. should grout film develop on your installation, it is generally irreparable.
clé creates one of the finest cement tiles in the world. each tile is hand made, one at a time, beginning with natural pigments hand-poured into molds then reinforced with concrete. the hand-crafted tile is then left to cure creating a silky, matte surface. available in a variety of shapes and patterns it is the tile’s variegated colors that sets it apart and makes clé’s cement tiles one of today's most sought after for both walls and floors.

If this tile reminds you of a flashy belt buckle, you’re not imagining things. The design of the Swashbuckler was actually inspired by the shape of a belt, loop and buckle. This idea was then transformed into an abstract design consisting of concentric ovals in tonal greys and featuring a central diamond design. Make a statement on your walls or floors with this unique encaustic tile.

if you are using tiles in kitchens, bathrooms, showers, restaurants and lobbies (all high-traffic areas) even after sealing cement tiles- you should expect a degree of patina as your tiles slowly acclimate to their location. if you are not familiar with unglazed surfaces that will age with time (such as limestones, terracottas, marbles etc) and are not a fan of patina, then you may want to select another tile.
