I used them in this kitchen, above, that was installed in a 1920’s Spanish style renovation. It is still one of my favorites. Note: the floor tiles weren’t properly sealed the first time (if at all, I don’t remember and it wasn’t my contractor) so they got really dirty really fast. I had to have them professionally scrubbed and then resealed but they definitely still had a lot of wear from those couple days of no-sealant days. It actually looks great because its an old house but if you had a new house you might not be so into it.

Items that state "ships within 10-12 weeks" are made to order, with the 10-12 weeks being the production time. We are not able to expedite the production time as each tile is produced by hand one at a time and then requires time to fully cure so they do not break while in transit. After this 10- 12 week period the order will ship from our warehouse and transit time should be 1-7 business days.
since our beginning at clé, we have become known for our tile collaborations with artists and designers, however, it is our long-term aim to broaden everyone's concept of tile and to transform it from being a functional backdrop to a more artful, provocative facet of our surroundings. to that end we have sought out heirloom quality tiles from across the globe. our tile offerings now extend from classic moroccan zellige (which we helped put on the map in the US), glazed raku-fired tiles from Vietnam, rustic italian terracotta and carrara stone to thin clay bricks domestically sourced.

The Ciment hex cement floor and wall tile, Holland strait offers a monochrome gray framing design. These hexagon tiles are set on a 1” cement base where color is poured over it into a mold, pressed in a hydraulic press and baked at extremely high temperatures. These handmade tiles offer natural variations and chips, which are reflections of traditional cement tile. Best for interior floors and walls, these and all cement tiles require sealing. Please refer to the sealing guide provided on...
"We are particularly fond of our Eastern Earthenware line that is made by a sixth generation tile maker in Vietnam - a country that has a long legacy of tile making. The tiles are wood fired which means that there is a lot of variation in the color and texture for each batch. No one tile is identical to another but rather a medley of hues. Getting people to understand how special these differences are has not only been an education but when clients finally get it, they are also completely enamored and willing to think of tile not just as a uniform, monochrome surface but to consider it more as a piece of art."
Outdoors: This is where we are used to seeing cement tiles because it really does wear so nicely over the years. It can get expensive if you are doing a large area or don’t already have a hard surface (concrete) to lay the tiles on, but if you have a small courtyard or a little patio off your bedroom or living room (we can all dream) then cement tile can be just the ticket to create that little bit of visual wow.

The bathroom is another place where cement tile backsplash can brighten the room. In our last blog post, we touched on how our cement tile patterns can bring lasting character to your bathroom in unexpected and exciting ways that you may not have thought of before (check out our use of Havana cement tile for a shower in our last blog post). You may not have thought of using cement tile backsplash for the bathroom before. We think cement tile backsplash in a bathroom is a must have that will suit any style. What is the current character of your bathroom? Does it match what you want it to be? If you’re interested in subtle and suave, our Fleur cement tile could be just what your bathroom needs. The apparent simplicity of the Rogue Hex encaustic tile is deceptive. Inspired by tessellations, or repeated, close-fitting polygons, the diamonds and triangles on this hexagon tile can be flipped in different directions to create cubes and other geometric designs. Design a chic black-and-white accent wall or entryway floor with timeless style using 8" x 9" Rogue encaustics.
Cement tiles were first produced in the South of France in the 1870s. They are known under various names such as Mission tiles, Cuban tiles, Victorian tiles, and hydraulic tiles. Cement tiles are popular in Mediterranean and Latin style spaces and are generally highly patterned with geometric and floral designs. Cement tiles are formed by hand pouring pigmented cement into decorative molds in order to separate the colors. When the cement has been set, the molds are removed and the tile compressed with 2,000 pounds of pressure. The result is an irresistible work of art to create a beautiful kitchen backsplash. Cement tiles are technically concrete tiles since they include aggregates such as marble dust and a layer of sand for reinforcement.
As mentioned before, cement tile, or encaustic concrete tiles, have multiple uses. There is vast cement tile applications means it can be used anywhere in your home or even inside commercial buildings. When it comes to remodeling your home, you could get concrete tiles on floors and walls of any section of the home. The cement floor tiles add a modern touch to the house if used on the floors. They can also be installed outdoors too, in your garage or on the pavement of your garden. You can immensely improve the appearance of your outdoor patios with concrete tile floors. All these purposes can be fulfilled in commercial buildings as well. The long-lasting factor of cement tiles makes it the best option for commercial use. Let’s go with the unlimited benefits of Patterned Concrete Tiles and transform any section of your home into your dream space, such as these:

Yeah cement tiles might be a strange style for a colonial, but you never know…it could be lovely. Unfortunately my husband had the range hood built and drywalled in a day when I wasn’t at the Dexter House so I don’t have any progress photos for you. He thought a wood hood would be easier to build (like he did at the Ravenna House) but I really wanted the plaster look and in the end, it was really easy to build too. Good luck with your’s – I’d love to see photos!
First off the rules: I’d warn you to make sure that the style of the house works with the style of the pattern so you aren’t dating yourself in 15 years. There are so many patterns out there now that work with almost every style, but my rule is to keep the tile reminiscent of the style of the house that it is in as that will give the tile longevity in style and design. That means don’t put something super graphic and modern in an antique craftsman.
The tile you’re probably most used to seeing is ceramic tile, but we want to redirect your focus to another type of tile that has the same beauty but comes with many more benefits. Cement tile is made from an entirely different process than ceramic tiles, with a hard-wearing mixture of mineral powder, cement, sand, and color pigment. It is compressed with about 2,000 pounds of hydraulic pressure, and the design becomes a part of the tile, not simply glazed or painted on the surface. Ceramic tiles are made with clays and glazes and are fired in kilns and don’t offer the same level of resiliency. Cement tiles have proven to be more durable and long-lasting than ceramic tiles and show less wear and tear over time. Backsplash cement tiles are also water-resistant and stain-resistant when sealed properly.
We now stock 4″ x 4″ solid colors of our handmade cement tile in black, white and grey. These smaller tiles work great for kitchen backsplashes, bathrooms, shower floors and bar areas. They also look amazing when mixed together with our larger 8″ or 12″ solid cement tiles and coordinate with many of our most popular patterns. The possibilities are endless!
if you are using tiles in kitchens, bathrooms, showers, restaurants and lobbies (all high-traffic areas) even after sealing cement tiles- you should expect a degree of patina as your tiles slowly acclimate to their location. if you are not familiar with unglazed surfaces that will age with time (such as limestones, terracottas, marbles etc) and are not a fan of patina, then you may want to select another tile.
