i love these ideas and appreciate the impressive amount of work that went into researching all of it. ironically, i am right now (as in…NOW, today) removing heavily patterned tile from the bathrooms in my 1970’s “spanish” (subdivision…ranch) house. the tiles have held up beautifully for 42 years, but yowza. living with the patterns on floors and walls day after day can be crazy-making over time. plus, the colorways are self-limiting — the tile demands center stage. i will replace the patterned tiles with plain cement tiles and go crazy with towels.
Inspired by the intricate natural beauty of a spiderweb, the 8" x 9" Blue Widow Hex tile transforms into a work of abstract art when it’s installed on your walls or floors. Cobalt and sky blues naturally create a calming effect, perfect for spa-inspired bathrooms. The geometric design of this encaustic tile comes alive as a diamond motif lending modern appeal to entryways, kitchens, bathrooms and more.
In the whole process of building a boutique hotel from scratch - including the construction, media and interior design - Granada Tile was by far our most professional partner. We envisioned a place created with Nicaraguan resources and Granada Tile is preserving history and formatting it in a contemporary way as we did. The quality of the tiles is outstanding and we would reckon they will still be there in hundreds of years. There is just one way to go when you are looking for original high quality cement tiles.

The tile you’re probably most used to seeing is ceramic tile, but we want to redirect your focus to another type of tile that has the same beauty but comes with many more benefits. Cement tile is made from an entirely different process than ceramic tiles, with a hard-wearing mixture of mineral powder, cement, sand, and color pigment. It is compressed with about 2,000 pounds of hydraulic pressure, and the design becomes a part of the tile, not simply glazed or painted on the surface. Ceramic tiles are made with clays and glazes and are fired in kilns and don’t offer the same level of resiliency. Cement tiles have proven to be more durable and long-lasting than ceramic tiles and show less wear and tear over time. Backsplash cement tiles are also water-resistant and stain-resistant when sealed properly.
we strongly believe that good design is evergreen, in that a well-crafted and artfully designed tile will stand the test of time. our desire is to offer enduring quality over trends - to offer substance over style and to focus on the transformative, not the mundane. we strive to show how a european love of tile can be equally embraced stateside and how we can elevate our everyday appreciation of surfaces with a material that can both embellish and protect our homes and architecture.
This series of solid-colored encaustic tiles was created so that there’s always something to perfectly coordinate with any patterned encaustic. Use encaustic cobalt cement tiles alone to make a monochromatic statement or mix and match with other solids and patterns to design a unique room. Even the solid colors of these wall and floor tiles will have natural variation and interest because they are hand mixed before being poured.

this step is not required, however, after the grout is dry (usually after 48 hours) you may elect to use a 17” floor polisher with a sand screen pad over the green pad to clean and finish the cement tiles. you will want to wet the floor enough so that the floor polisher is always working on a wet surface. This step will take care and experience so only proceed if your contractor has used this step in the past.

This series of solid-colored encaustic tiles was created so that there’s always something to perfectly coordinate with any patterned encaustic. Use encaustic black cement tiles alone to make a monochromatic statement or mix and match with other solids and patterns to design a unique room. Even the solid colors of these wall and floor tiles will have natural variation and interest because they are hand mixed before being poured.

Additionally, encaustic tile works best in certain environments. It does not work well in seasonal climates with freeze and thaw cycles because the shift in temperature can cause lifting of the tile. Encaustic cement floor tiles also shouldn’t be used near chemically-treated water, like pool surrounds because the chemicals can fade and damage the design.
Many believe that concrete tiles are simply made of cement. However, they are a mixture of multiple ingredients. While the main binding agent is cement, it also includes sand and rocks or crushed stone of different kinds. Different kinds of concrete tiles use different amounts of cement proportion. A right percentage of Portland cement comprises from 10 to 15 percent alkalis, sulfates, and chlorides are what make up the best concrete tiles. Through a process called hydration, a hardening process of cement and water to make concrete gets stronger and continues for years. The strong concrete tiles look like plastic when they are freshly made. However, once they set, they are the hardest and strongest material you’ll ever find.
First of all, if your tiles are light colored, use a white colored setting material. Similarly, use a darker setter for darker tiles. Install the tiles by following the instructions. Use a wet saw if you need to cut the tiles. Once the tiles are set, clean them with a mop or cloth after 48 hours to get rid of any excessive grout. Make sure you seal your tiles in place with a sealer. In case of cracks, use a concrete patch material that you can find in the stores easily. Fill in the cracks and then, seal them in place.
Thanks, Julia. I think it feels traditional too. Right now, I think I will just leave the backsplash painted rather than add anything else. I may change my mind down the road. The area behind the sink is actually too narrow for any sort of backsplash at all. There is a window right there, and the apron goes down within an inch or two of the countertop.
Cement tiles have been revered for their unmatched durability, crack and chip-resistance, waterproof finish, and incredible amount of designs and possibilities available for years. Hard wood floors continue to be a popular choice among home and business owners for their perceived value and aesthetic. However, hard woods are limited in use, and while they look gorgeous at first, they can quickly become scratched, faded, and warped due to water damage. Ceramic tiles are a lovely alternative to hard woods but history has shown us that they aren’t the most durable option either. The cement tiles at Granada Tile are hand-poured and set by an immense amount of pressure to create a nearly impenetrable product. They come in so many more looks than hard woods, and eliminate virtually all of the associated concerns of wood floors and ceramic tile.
