Using a tile saw, I made the first few cuts. (We rent most of our tools from a local rental company, but Home Depot rents a wide variety of tools for DIYers.) The key to getting the backsplash level vertically and horizontally was all riding on the first row. The shape of the opening for the stove required that I cut off the bottom of the first four tiles. Because the height was slightly off on the left and right side, I used scraps of cardboard to raise the tile on the left side the negligible amount necessary to make it perfectly level with the right side.

Similar to the previous place, it’s a gallery style set up with a vast Arabesque mosaic pattern as the focal point. The reddish-brown earth tone chosen for the walls is the perfect backdrop for the firm’s handcrafted ceramic tile products, and it’s not unlike some of the colors you can find in the Medina of Marrakech. The sea grass flooring, the water feature surrounded by moss, the succulents featured in the soffit niches, the custom made brass lanterns, and the eclectic world music all provide for an almost spa-like experience.
Cement tiles are typically 8 by 8 inches and run about $15 to $29 per square foot. Rustico Tile & Stone’s price range for standard 8×8 tiles are $9-$17/sf. Installation would be the same as ceramic or porcelain tile, with one big difference. Cement tile has to be sealed with penetrating sealer after is has been set but before grouting. The sealer will protect the front facade of the tile from absorbing the grout material.

why do you caution against using permacolor grouts? Permacolor grouts are the newest iteration of grout development. it’s really great for color-fast qualities, however everything that makes it color fast is a demon to your beautiful cement tiles. first, the grout is colored with more intense pigments that will stain any unglazed stone, cement or unglazed tile. second, it is fast drying and less viscous than standard grouts and therefore there is a greater possibility of leaving a grout film. should grout film develop on your installation, it is generally irreparable.

During the installation process, cement tile requires a few steps to ensuring it does not get stained from the materials used and will look as great as possible. Sealing the grout is part of this process. This post explains why it’s important to seal grout during the installation process for concrete tiles, and how to do it. If you’re a DIY homeowner researching the process for installing your own cement tiles, don’t forget this step. It will save you time, money, and many headaches down the road. Our Moroccan Cement Tile is a type of tile which is made from cement, these tiles are very durable and sturdy, being especially well-suited to high traffic areas, and they come in a range of patterns and colors. Cement tile tends to be about twice as heavy as ceramic tile, and it is less subject to breakage and chipping. Morocco is especially famous for their brightly-colored cement tile designs.

Bathrooms: I just installed these tiles from Erin Adams design in my own bathroom and my search for those is what started this whole thing. Most cement tiles will work either on the floor or walls of your bathroom, but check with the manufacturer as some tiles will need to be sealed before they get a lot of foot traffic and water on them. Again, seal them after install and ideally keep sealing every couple years as needed.
The main difference between concrete and ceramic tiles is, unlike ceramic tiles, the design of cement tiles isn’t painted on top of the tile, but is a solid part of the tile itself. Ceramic tiles are made with color pigments on the surface and topped with a glaze. The fact that the design is applied to the top of the tile is what causes ceramic tiles to scratch and fade. The manufacturing process of concrete tiles is what gives them their strength and resistance to the typical wear and tear you see on ceramic tiles.
Adding new cement tiles to a bathroom will instantly give it updated style and personality, and can help you create a spa-like environment, or a funky bathroom that really speaks to your taste. You don’t even need to tear everything out and the bathroom sink to make a significant visual impact and add perceived value. And, the best part is, it can often be a DIY job. If you’re wanting to make a real change in your bathroom, we suggest tiling the walls and inside the shower. Don’t know how and worried that you’ll install your concrete tiles incorrectly? Don’t be! Just follow this step-by-step post for tiling a bathroom wall and you’ll have everything you need to do it right.
Anyway…back to the tiles.  Garrett really wanted to inset the backsplash into the wall so the edges of the tile would be concealed by the surrounding drywall.  I wasn’t really concerned about seeing the tile edges, but I let him go after it anyway ‘cause marriage is all about compromise.  And I like to compromise on the small stuff ;).  So Garrett put up 1/4″ hardiboard behind the backsplash and 5/8″ drwyall around it.  He pushed out the drywall immediately on either side of the hardiboard with 1/8″ furring strips so I had a solid 3/4″ of depth to work with for laying the mortar and tile.
The best way to add color variation and pattern in a neutral bathroom that you want to keep soft and serene is to upgrade the floors with bright and airy patterned concrete floor tiles. Tiling the floors will make enough of a statement that turns a plain bathroom into an elegant one, without distracting from the calm and spa-like vibe of the rest of the space. We love the Normandy tile in white and soft grey for this application. The swirling traditional pattern offers just enough visual variation and interest, without looking busy. The white and grey keep everything serene and neutral, but add that extra touch a plain bathroom needs to take it from blah to beautiful.

If you’re looking for a bold-floor look that is sure to be the focus of any room, encaustic tile is a perfect choice. These artistic tiles are made by dying cement tiles with two or more colors using mineral pigments and a mold, creating a beautiful and colorful design. Encaustic tile has a rich history, having been around since medieval times and reaching their height in the 1700–1800s when the tiles were able to be mass produced and became available to the general public. England, which was the historic center of production, still has the greatest amount of encaustic tile floors. When placed together on a floor, encaustic tiles create a repeating pattern that pairs perfectly with neutral wall colors. This look blends old-world style with modern colors and patterns into one unique and timeless tile.
not typically a fan of shades of green, we decided to begin to collect emerald-colored images onto a pinboard to see if they continued to capture our curiosity. we can’t believe it’s already managed to become one of our favorite pinboards. inspired by these beautiful images we have added green colorways to many of our cement patterns and even our watermark! who knew shades of green would capture us and our clients curiosity in such a big way?

if clé cement tiles are pre-polished and pre-sealed, why do I have to use a grout release? clé is pleased to offer cement tiles that are pre-polished and pre-sealed. if you have witnessed the difference in cement tiles without this hand-rubbed finish, you know that clé cement tiles’ smooth finish helps our tiles through transportation blemishes and the first stages of installation care. HOWEVER, grouts are very problematic to cement tiles and taking extra care against staining is essential to success. please be sure to ALWAYS use grout release.

I’d love to see a roundup of consoles that are less than a foot deep, and bonus points if you include some that have storage and aren’t just gorgeous expensive art-furniture that I can’t cram wet gloves into.
