The technique of creating mission cement tiles came to Mexico through Spanish artisans. Handmade mission cement tiles take a special mold for each design. The process involves blending high quality white Portland cement, marble powder, fine sand, and natural mineral color pigments. Unlike other varieties, cement tiles do not use glazes or a kiln. Rather, they undergo hydrolysis and they harden through their soak in vats of water. Solidifying the material with a hydraulic press gives these tiles exceptional resistance and superior strength.

Leaving those beauties stacked in the corner while Garrett finished drywalling was akin to torture.  Okay, that’s probably a little harsh, but I’m just not a patient person when it comes to finishing a kitchen.  It’s only a hair easier than waiting for your baby to arrive after they’ve been cooking for over 41 weeks (not going to happen this time…right baby?!).

With countless colors, patterns and styles, concrete tiles from Westside Tile & Stone, Inc. provide an affordable kitchen backsplash tile in high quality material and design option with growing visual appeal. clé celebrates this historic cement tile with our own modern take on a 150 year old tile crafting legacy. each encaustic cement tile is painstakingly hand crafted, one tile at a time, to create solid or patterned tiles formed from pigmented cement. the tiles are not fired in a kiln, but are cured in water for a lasting cement surface that is as stunning in its finish as it is good for the environment.
this page is of particular importance to your encaustic cement tile installation. this is because the highest degree of incidence with cement tile installations are based on failures that occur using the wrong grout or the wrong grouting methods. remember, your tiles are cement and they can be stained with the grout pigment as this pigment is the exact colorant that is used to pigment cement tiles.
On the practical side of kitchen décor, nothing beats cement tile for a backsplash. Our tiles are handmade by craftsmen to ensure nothing less than top quality and durability. Cement tile is easy to clean and naturally water-resistant, making it the perfect way to shield your wall from unsightly food stains. Additionally, cement tile can easily last for decades, so there’s no concern of fading or discoloration.
Backsplash tiles are usually small to medium sized tiles and can be ceramic, porcelain or cement. They are meant to provide a water-resistant and durable barrier between the wall of the kitchen and all of the messes from cooking. Backsplash tiles help to prevent staining and water damage on the wall, and provide a stylistic touch with the nearly unlimited amount of colors, sizes, shapes, and patterns to choose from.
If this tile reminds you of a flashy belt buckle, you’re not imagining things. The design of the Swashbuckler was actually inspired by the shape of a belt, loop and buckle. This idea was then transformed into an abstract design consisting of concentric ovals in tonal greys and featuring a central diamond design. Make a statement on your walls or floors with this unique encaustic tile.

Using a tile saw, I made the first few cuts. (We rent most of our tools from a local rental company, but Home Depot rents a wide variety of tools for DIYers.) The key to getting the backsplash level vertically and horizontally was all riding on the first row. The shape of the opening for the stove required that I cut off the bottom of the first four tiles. Because the height was slightly off on the left and right side, I used scraps of cardboard to raise the tile on the left side the negligible amount necessary to make it perfectly level with the right side.
The bathroom is another place where cement tile backsplash can brighten the room. In our last blog post, we touched on how our cement tile patterns can bring lasting character to your bathroom in unexpected and exciting ways that you may not have thought of before (check out our use of Havana cement tile for a shower in our last blog post). You may not have thought of using cement tile backsplash for the bathroom before. We think cement tile backsplash in a bathroom is a must have that will suit any style. What is the current character of your bathroom? Does it match what you want it to be? If you’re interested in subtle and suave, our Fleur cement tile could be just what your bathroom needs. Or, if you’re looking for a pop of color, take a look at our El Fenn Blue cement tile.

It is expected that 2%-3% of your tile arrives damaged (chipped or scratched), since our tiles are primarily handmade, hand picked and hand packed exposing the product to breakage, therefore slight surface issues are standard. The best practice is to order at least 10% more than your project requirements to cover allow for these issues, as well as other breakage during installation.

The best way to add color variation and pattern in a neutral bathroom that you want to keep soft and serene is to upgrade the floors with bright and airy patterned concrete floor tiles. Tiling the floors will make enough of a statement that turns a plain bathroom into an elegant one, without distracting from the calm and spa-like vibe of the rest of the space. We love the Normandy tile in white and soft grey for this application. The swirling traditional pattern offers just enough visual variation and interest, without looking busy. The white and grey keep everything serene and neutral, but add that extra touch a plain bathroom needs to take it from blah to beautiful.

Historically more common throughout Europe than here, they've gathered major steam on this side of the pond. Adhesive, tile spacers, notched trowel, bucket, tape measure, grout and grout sponge. Tip: Pick a grout color that complements your tile, avoid an exact color match. Select one that will be easy to keep clean and try to stay away from bright white, unless you love scrubbing. Seal the cement tiles with a penetrating sealer like HydraGuard first. Install it. Then seal the grout. The sealer protects from grout staining. Premixed grout with sealer is not the best, so use with sanded grout and then seal it. It’s a far better process and better protection.

Entry: Yes. You can put cement tiles in your entry but it certainly sets the vibe for the whole house. If you have again a Mediterranean or a Spanish style house then go for it, but if you have an English Tudor, then be careful what pattern you go for and choose one that has a more delicate, traditional feeling. Also anything too light or simple will get worn easier so go for darker/busier so that the wear and tear doesn’t stand out so much.

NOTE: This is hand-made, rustic cement tile. With cement tile of this nature, there will be color and texture variations from piece to piece. Color shading can vary even on a single tile. Chips or texture variations may exist. This is normal and not considered a defect for handmade tiles. It is advised to order all cement tile needed for a project. Subsequent orders can come in with shade variations. Samples of colors ordered can vary from actual shading or product received in a final ordered placed. Average lead time for most cement tile orders is approximately 4-8 weeks. Please inquire about current lead times prior to ordering.
I love, love the look, but they are high maintenance. I got white and light gray tiles in the bathrooms, definitely do not recommend white or light colored cement tiles. They stain very easily. The installation is also a challange. Like others said, sealing before grouting (once) and more than three times after is a must. First picture shows tiles after less than a year in use. Second pictures shows freshly installed tiles. My husband never wants this tiles again, and we are already thinking of replacing them in the guest bathroom.

Proper installation and protection of cement tile is key to enjoying its lasting beauty. Please ensure that tile is laid by a licensed tile installer. Encaustic cement tiles are installed in both commercial and residential environments, from restaurants and retail stores to kitchens, bathrooms, shower walls, shower floors, patios, and living areas.
