Entry: Yes. You can put cement tiles in your entry but it certainly sets the vibe for the whole house. If you have again a Mediterranean or a Spanish style house then go for it, but if you have an English Tudor, then be careful what pattern you go for and choose one that has a more delicate, traditional feeling. Also anything too light or simple will get worn easier so go for darker/busier so that the wear and tear doesn’t stand out so much.

If you’re the DIY kind of home or business owner, installing cement tile yourself may be a great option. Tiling a floor is one of the most common DIY projects. While doing it yourself can save money down the road, if you don’t know how to install them properly, concrete tiles won’t add the kind of value you’re hoping for. Cement tiles look incredibly stylish and high-end, but if they are improperly installed and begin to stain or warp over time, or just look uneven, they’ll only end up costing you more money, time, and headaches down the road. Learn how to tile a floor using cement tiles with these tips and professional advice.

Trends come and go; what is popular and beautiful today, is second best tomorrow in the design world. So it’s no surprise if you’re feeling a little skeptical to use patterned cement tiles in your home, and worried that this fad will be yet another passing trend. But cement tiles are here to stay. In fact, they never left. Cement tiles have been used for over 150 years in grand residences and public buildings.

New from Sausalito-based Cle Tiles: the Artist Cement Collection of handmade encaustic cement tiles designed by 11 artist studios located in the US, Europe, and South America. The series includes designs by architects, artists, designers, and sculptors (and includes pieces from Erica Tanov, a Remodelista favorite). Here’s a selection of the offerings:

what colors are suitable for grouting cement tiles? clé always recommends a neutral natural grey (un-pigmented) grout color for all cement tiles. besides being the traditional shade for these historic tiles, the lack of pigment allows for a stain-free installation. another color recommendation is to select the shade that matches closest to the lightest shade in your pattern. CAUTION: many grout manufacturers have begun to pigment their “natural gray” grouts. so be sure your contractor checks with the manufacturer. If there is pigment, your contractor must take care against staining.
If you’re in the process of building or renovating a home or commercial space, choosing flooring material is on your list of to-dos. While hardwood floors are beautiful and classic, don’t dismiss tile floors. Today’s tile isn’t your grandmother’s tile flooring, and it can transform your space from one that looks like everyone else’s into a space that’s completely unique and speaks to your personality. It’s even more important in a commercial space to stand out from the crowd and develop a signature style. Cement tile floors can do all that, while delivering a durable and practical flooring option. No, cement tiles are not truly encaustic, but it is an acceptable label for cement tiles, also known as inlaid tiles. When cement tiles were first introduced during the mid-1800s, the Victorians thought they looked just like encaustic tiles which have been around for centuries, and mistakenly started referring to them as encaustic tiles also. Since then, the term has been widely used interchangeably to describe these two tile art forms.
A custom banquette filled with colorful pillows coordinates with the backsplash and anchors the light-filled corner of the kitchen, creating a cozy breakfast nook. They also installed a richly patterned pressed tin ceiling to add vintage flair to an often overlooked part of a room. Eye-catching black trim makes the windows pop and completes this bold kitchen makeover.
This series of solid-colored encaustic tiles was created so that there’s always something to perfectly coordinate with any patterned encaustic. Use encaustic black cement tiles alone to make a monochromatic statement or mix and match with other solids and patterns to design a unique room. Even the solid colors of these wall and floor tiles will have natural variation and interest because they are hand mixed before being poured.

this step is not required, however, after the grout is dry (usually after 48 hours) you may elect to use a 17” floor polisher with a sand screen pad over the green pad to clean and finish the cement tiles. you will want to wet the floor enough so that the floor polisher is always working on a wet surface. This step will take care and experience so only proceed if your contractor has used this step in the past.
Side note: Using a blade attachment on your power drill makes the job of mixing mortar easy, but be careful. The first few times I tried to mix the mortar, the blade was so powerful that it spun the bucket and slammed it into my shins. In order to keep this from happening again, I wedged the bucket between the front steps and my sneakers. Even then, it took a lot of muscle to hold it in place.
