Whether it’s spills, splashes, or splatters, the kitchen is often on the receiving end of some pretty tough messes. If you’re not careful, you can easily end up with a kitchen covered in food stains and grease spatters, which can lead to a dingy appearance or even lingering odors. In our opinion, the kitchen should be a source of comfort; a place where families and friends can gather around, share a meal, and spend quality time together. We love to see kitchens live up to their potential. That’s why we at Riad love to see our cement tiles being used to create kitchen backsplashes.

Entry: Yes. You can put cement tiles in your entry but it certainly sets the vibe for the whole house. If you have again a Mediterranean or a Spanish style house then go for it, but if you have an English Tudor, then be careful what pattern you go for and choose one that has a more delicate, traditional feeling. Also anything too light or simple will get worn easier so go for darker/busier so that the wear and tear doesn’t stand out so much.

Villa Lagoon Tile's cement tiles are hand-crafted by master artisans using a process over 150 years old. The low-energy non-fired decorative tiles are produced from cement, mineral pigments, ground marble dust, and sand, then pressed and cured to produce one of the most beautiful surfaces on the market. The hand-made nature of cement tile means that no two tiles are alike, with color and pattern variations that give it a beauty similar to natural stone and hardwood surfaces. With proper sealant...

this has been a constant theme at clé. and recently, we’ve been asking ourselves this question, not just in the way we select our products, support our artists, work with our clients and engage with our team mates. but we’ve also been asking ourselves the bigger question- how can we make a difference every day for one another, in our communities and in our world.
Anyway…back to the tiles.  Garrett really wanted to inset the backsplash into the wall so the edges of the tile would be concealed by the surrounding drywall.  I wasn’t really concerned about seeing the tile edges, but I let him go after it anyway ‘cause marriage is all about compromise.  And I like to compromise on the small stuff ;).  So Garrett put up 1/4″ hardiboard behind the backsplash and 5/8″ drwyall around it.  He pushed out the drywall immediately on either side of the hardiboard with 1/8″ furring strips so I had a solid 3/4″ of depth to work with for laying the mortar and tile.

in 2009 when artist and designer, deborah osburn began her blog, ‘tile envy’, she did so because no one else was talking about tile at the time. ‘tile envy’ quickly garnered an avid following and when readers started to ask how to source the unique artisan tiles she was featuring, deborah found herself launching an online tile shop in 2012 aptly named clé (pronounced 'clay') tile. selling tiles solely online seemed audacious at a time when tile stores were still deeply rooted in the showroom experience, however, architects, designers and design-savvy customers proved they were happy to have access to a wider array of decorative tiles and the online boutique took off.
Everything I’ve found online recommends an impregnator/penetrating sealer for cement tiles.  Cement tiles are super porous meaning they’ll stain easily, so you have to seal them prior to grouting.  I plan to use this sealer product.  And then I’ll grout them with either a bright white grout or an off-white grout that matches the field color of the tile.  We ended up with 1/4″ grout lines (which is 1/8″ thicker than the manufacturer recommends…oops), so I’ll use a sanded grout.  Stay tuned for that.
clé celebrates this historic cement tile with our own modern take on a 150 year old tile crafting legacy. each encaustic cement tile is painstakingly hand crafted, one tile at a time, to create solid or patterned tiles formed from pigmented cement. the tiles are not fired in a kiln, but are cured in water for a lasting cement surface that is as stunning in its finish as it is good for the environment.
Make your kitchen look like one of those on Pinterest with cement tiles in a large pattern. The large, bold design will give your kitchen an instant upgrade that is fresh and totally unique. You don’t need to do a total remodel, or even change the cabinets, to make a huge impact. A few trending concrete tile kitchen floor designs are black and white geometric patterns, blue and white patterns, and a mix of creamy neutrals.
Bathrooms: I just installed these tiles from Erin Adams design in my own bathroom and my search for those is what started this whole thing. Most cement tiles will work either on the floor or walls of your bathroom, but check with the manufacturer as some tiles will need to be sealed before they get a lot of foot traffic and water on them. Again, seal them after install and ideally keep sealing every couple years as needed.
cement tiles have been around for the past 150 years and have been called numerous names including encaustic cement tile, cement tile, concrete tile, hydraulicos*, cuban tile, and more. whatever their nomenclature, clé offers one of the finest cement tiles on a surface that is at once muted, varied, matte and silky. these tiles come in a myriad of patterns, think: moroccan, black and whites, neutrals, stripes, and more. in addition to our standard eight-by-eight-inch square tiles we offer color blocks of rectangles, hexes, diamonds, triangles, arabesques and scallops. our compelling cement tile patterns and shapes include some of the most sought-after tiles today for both walls and floors, indoors and out.
"We are particularly fond of our Eastern Earthenware line that is made by a sixth generation tile maker in Vietnam - a country that has a long legacy of tile making. The tiles are wood fired which means that there is a lot of variation in the color and texture for each batch. No one tile is identical to another but rather a medley of hues. Getting people to understand how special these differences are has not only been an education but when clients finally get it, they are also completely enamored and willing to think of tile not just as a uniform, monochrome surface but to consider it more as a piece of art."
Use graphic encaustic cement floor tiles, such as these Moroccan imports, on the wall. The thick handmade squares fit together like puzzle pieces to form colorful medallions. Shown in the picture are 8-by-8-inch tiles in the Meilla pattern, $7.25 each. Rustico Tile & Stone’s price is $7.80 for a 5-color tile. Prices vary based on how many colors are in the design.

Does that necessarily make it bad? I grilled the tile pro who did beautiful things with subway and hex tiles in our third floor Airbnb bathroom. James Taylor has been tiling for almost 20 years and there were no ifs, and, or buts when it came to his feelings about cement tile. "I don't even know why it was ever made, to be honest with you," he said.
