This series of solid-colored encaustic tiles was created so that there’s always something to perfectly coordinate with any patterned encaustic. Use encaustic white cement tiles alone to make a monochromatic statement or mix and match with other solids and patterns to design a unique room. Even the solid colors of these wall and floor tiles will have natural variation and interest because they are hand mixed before being poured.
since our beginning at clé, we have become known for our tile collaborations with artists and designers, however, it is our long-term aim to broaden everyone's concept of tile and to transform it from being a functional backdrop to a more artful, provocative facet of our surroundings. to that end we have sought out heirloom quality tiles from across the globe. our tile offerings now extend from classic moroccan zellige (which we helped put on the map in the US), glazed raku-fired tiles from Vietnam, rustic italian terracotta and carrara stone to thin clay bricks domestically sourced.
Everything I’ve found online recommends an impregnator/penetrating sealer for cement tiles.  Cement tiles are super porous meaning they’ll stain easily, so you have to seal them prior to grouting.  I plan to use this sealer product.  And then I’ll grout them with either a bright white grout or an off-white grout that matches the field color of the tile.  We ended up with 1/4″ grout lines (which is 1/8″ thicker than the manufacturer recommends…oops), so I’ll use a sanded grout.  Stay tuned for that.
Cement tiles are undoubtedly one of the most stylish and sought after home materials of the design world today. They add artisan-quality color and pattern in a space that just can’t be recreated with any other material. Not even ceramic or porcelain tiles match up. If you have a building or remodeling project you want to tackle in your home or business, be sure to consider cement tile floors. This project makes a big visual impact in a space, without taking over the other elements. It can also be a DIY project, which saves you money. Learn about the many benefits of cement tile floors here and get inspired.
Hand painted and hand poured tiles are very different from each other and are actually completely different types of tile. While ceramic tiles are hand painted with glazes and pigments, cement tiles are hand poured with the design set into the tile itself. This difference is what makes cement tiles so much more durable and long-lasting than ceramic tiles. But that’s not all cement tiles are good for. They offer many more benefits and can be used in a number of ways both in and outside your home or business. Learn more about the features and benefits of handmade cement tiles here.

clé celebrates this historic cement tile with our own modern take on a 150 year old tile crafting legacy. each encaustic cement tile is painstakingly hand crafted, one tile at a time, to create solid or patterned tiles formed from pigmented cement. the tiles are not fired in a kiln, but are cured in water for a lasting cement surface that is as stunning in its finish as it is good for the environment.

this step is not required, however, after the grout is dry (usually after 48 hours) you may elect to use a 17” floor polisher with a sand screen pad over the green pad to clean and finish the cement tiles. you will want to wet the floor enough so that the floor polisher is always working on a wet surface. This step will take care and experience so only proceed if your contractor has used this step in the past.

Backsplash tiles are usually small to medium sized tiles and can be ceramic, porcelain or cement. They are meant to provide a water-resistant and durable barrier between the wall of the kitchen and all of the messes from cooking. Backsplash tiles help to prevent staining and water damage on the wall, and provide a stylistic touch with the nearly unlimited amount of colors, sizes, shapes, and patterns to choose from.

HOWEVER, grouts are very problematic to cement tiles and taking extra care against staining is essential to success. please be sure to ALWAYS use grout release.

Leaving those beauties stacked in the corner while Garrett finished drywalling was akin to torture.  Okay, that’s probably a little harsh, but I’m just not a patient person when it comes to finishing a kitchen.  It’s only a hair easier than waiting for your baby to arrive after they’ve been cooking for over 41 weeks (not going to happen this time…right baby?!).

Cement tiles are typically 8 by 8 inches and run about $15 to $29 per square foot. Rustico Tile & Stone’s price range for standard 8×8 tiles are $9-$17/sf. Installation would be the same as ceramic or porcelain tile, with one big difference. Cement tile has to be sealed with penetrating sealer after is has been set but before grouting. The sealer will protect the front facade of the tile from absorbing the grout material.
This is a great question. I have not corrected our issue yet. However, after a lot of thought, I think I am going to use painted wood trim as edging. Unfortunately, cement tile does not come with finishing trim pieces. I wonder if the companies that make them will ever address that issue, especially now that this style of tile is so popular. I suppose it is really meant for the floor, but cement tile makes such a beautiful backsplash material.
Adhesive, tile spacers, notched trowel, bucket, tape measure, grout and grout sponge. Tip: Pick a grout color that complements your tile, avoid an exact color match. Select one that will be easy to keep clean and try to stay away from bright white, unless you love scrubbing. Seal the cement tiles with a penetrating sealer like HydraGuard first. Install it. Then seal the grout. The sealer protects from grout staining. Premixed grout with sealer is not the best, so use with sanded grout and then seal it. It’s a far better process and better protection.
Then I started telling tile installers my plans. And the response from each of them was the same: A concerned look on their faces, the one that says clear as day, "I need to tread carefully here and be sure this person doesn't make a horrible mistake." The sentiment was the same with each as well: They'd do it if I insisted, but I'd be hearing "I told you so," down the road.

I have trouble with long-term monogamous commitments to color. (It’s not you, color, it’s me.) My favorite color changes on a regular basis. It is currently orange. Last year it was blue. Knowing this about myself, I began to explore all of the black, white and grey options. Some people think of these shades as the ho-hum neutrals. I think of them as the stable counterpart to capricious color-changing moods.

I love, love the look, but they are high maintenance. I got white and light gray tiles in the bathrooms, definitely do not recommend white or light colored cement tiles. They stain very easily. The installation is also a challange. Like others said, sealing before grouting (once) and more than three times after is a must. First picture shows tiles after less than a year in use. Second pictures shows freshly installed tiles. My husband never wants this tiles again, and we are already thinking of replacing them in the guest bathroom.

Thanks, Julia. I think it feels traditional too. Right now, I think I will just leave the backsplash painted rather than add anything else. I may change my mind down the road. The area behind the sink is actually too narrow for any sort of backsplash at all. There is a window right there, and the apron goes down within an inch or two of the countertop.
