Hardwoods are beautiful and go with all different styles of homes, but are high maintenance and need to be refinished every handful of years. Cement floor tiles don’t ever need to be refinished, and they don’t show scratches, scuffing, and fading like hardwoods. Cement tiles are great for every room in your home, including high-traffic areas, and are practical and cost-efficient for a busy commercial space.
It is expected that 2%-3% of your tile arrives damaged (chipped or scratched), since our tiles are primarily handmade, hand picked and hand packed exposing the product to breakage, therefore slight surface issues are standard. The best practice is to order at least 10% more than your project requirements to cover allow for these issues, as well as other breakage during installation.
What I loved about working with these cement tiles (besides them being fabulous!) is the size. They’re each 8”x8”, which made the install go fast. I did the whole kitchen backsplash in about an hour. After spending two full days laying the marble herringbone backsplash at Ravenna, I was overjoyed by the simplicity of this project. The only added difficulty I found with these tiles was aligning the pattern. It’s not rocket science (I’m looking at you, Jamie), but I did spend a little extra time laying them out. I started by marking a vertical line at the center of the backsplash and then laid the first row beginning with the middle tile and working outwards. After laying the center three tiles all the way to the top of the backsplash and checking that each row was level, it was time to cut the edge tiles.
We offer a very full selection of tile flooring, wall, backsplash, accents, trim pieces, tile moldings, and tile accessories in assorted shapes, designs, materials, and textures. When I got to my local tile shop to pick out something in person, I couldn't resist one last look. In my research, I'd learned all about "patina" that develops over time. Patina doesn't sound so bad, even though I know perfectly well from my zinc countertop that patina is sometimes just a nice way of saying it shows every little mark and scuff for years and years until it's old and then and only then is it actually a desirable thing. I admired the cement tiles on display, and asked the consultant working with me about them. Even she didn't want to sell them to me, or to anyone, for that matter.

The tile you’re probably most used to seeing is ceramic tile, but we want to redirect your focus to another type of tile that has the same beauty but comes with many more benefits. Cement tile is made from an entirely different process than ceramic tiles, with a hard-wearing mixture of mineral powder, cement, sand, and color pigment. It is compressed with about 2,000 pounds of hydraulic pressure, and the design becomes a part of the tile, not simply glazed or painted on the surface. Ceramic tiles are made with clays and glazes and are fired in kilns and don’t offer the same level of resiliency. Cement tiles have proven to be more durable and long-lasting than ceramic tiles and show less wear and tear over time. Backsplash cement tiles are also water-resistant and stain-resistant when sealed properly.
I went type A exactly one time while mixing a custom paint color for the upstairs at the old house. It was a big room and I knew it would take two gallons, so I actually measured the paint components. And it worked – I got two gallons of paint that exactly matched each other! (However, if I ever need to do that again, I’ll just use a five gallon bucket do the usual add-color-til-it-looks-good method.)
Bathrooms: I just installed these tiles from Erin Adams design in my own bathroom and my search for those is what started this whole thing. Most cement tiles will work either on the floor or walls of your bathroom, but check with the manufacturer as some tiles will need to be sealed before they get a lot of foot traffic and water on them. Again, seal them after install and ideally keep sealing every couple years as needed.
It is also essential to order enough material, including overage, to help prevent the need to order more tile later. The exact same tile product, color, size, and dye-lots are not necessarily available to us from our manufacturers at a later date. Sometimes, after a period of time goes by, products can be discontinued by manufacturers. So, in the tile business, accurate ordering includes a certain percentage of overage, by necessity. Consult your licensed tile contractor about best practices regarding accurate tile measurement for your job, including an appropriate percentage of overage.

Talk to the contractors who make concrete tiles (see our list of resources) and they'll be able to find a way to produce the look that fits your budget parameters and design needs. Craig Smith, owner of Dex Industries in Atlanta, a company that designs and builds concrete countertops, custom tiles, and more, says, "Not only can we produce elegant tile designs, we can do shorter runs than are possible for a ceramic tile maker."
First of all, if your tiles are light colored, use a white colored setting material. Similarly, use a darker setter for darker tiles. Install the tiles by following the instructions. Use a wet saw if you need to cut the tiles. Once the tiles are set, clean them with a mop or cloth after 48 hours to get rid of any excessive grout. Make sure you seal your tiles in place with a sealer. In case of cracks, use a concrete patch material that you can find in the stores easily. Fill in the cracks and then, seal them in place.
They went to France to learn the technique then came back and set up shop in Grenada, starting a factory that makes the eco-friendly, sensational cement tiles. "Not only are these handmade cement tiles strong, durable and scratch and stain resistant, they have a vintage beauty that can be very versatile," says Marcos. "The tiles’ bold patterns and dynamic colors can look just as beautiful in a historic mansion as in a new loft."

in 2009 when artist and designer, deborah osburn began her blog, ‘tile envy’, she did so because no one else was talking about tile at the time. ‘tile envy’ quickly garnered an avid following and when readers started to ask how to source the unique artisan tiles she was featuring, deborah found herself launching an online tile shop in 2012 aptly named clé (pronounced 'clay') tile. selling tiles solely online seemed audacious at a time when tile stores were still deeply rooted in the showroom experience, however, architects, designers and design-savvy customers proved they were happy to have access to a wider array of decorative tiles and the online boutique took off.
The divider is set into the mold. This is what will separate the colors to create the surface of the concrete tile. Each color is poured into its specific section of the divider. Once each color section is filled, the divider is removed and a mixture of fine sand and Portland cement is applied. This is the second layer and is used as a drier and to reinforce the first layer of the cement tile.
Use graphic encaustic cement floor tiles, such as these Moroccan imports, on the wall. The thick handmade squares fit together like puzzle pieces to form colorful medallions. Shown in the picture are 8-by-8-inch tiles in the Meilla pattern, $7.25 each. Rustico Tile & Stone’s price is $7.80 for a 5-color tile. Prices vary based on how many colors are in the design.
