I have to admit I chuckled a little hearing that it’s national ceramic tile day. Is there anything without a national day? This post is an absolute godsend. There’s about 10 different placed in my home that I want to add ceramic tile to. We have a midcentury raised ranch that is so cookie-cutter-vanilla-suburbia it makes me want to cry. I need to add some (appropriate) spice to this house ASAP!
The apparent simplicity of the Rogue Hex encaustic tile is deceptive. Inspired by tessellations, or repeated, close-fitting polygons, the diamonds and triangles on this hexagon tile can be flipped in different directions to create cubes and other geometric designs. Design a chic black-and-white accent wall or entryway floor with timeless style using 8" x 9" Rogue encaustics.

First of all, if your tiles are light colored, use a white colored setting material. Similarly, use a darker setter for darker tiles. Install the tiles by following the instructions. Use a wet saw if you need to cut the tiles. Once the tiles are set, clean them with a mop or cloth after 48 hours to get rid of any excessive grout. Make sure you seal your tiles in place with a sealer. In case of cracks, use a concrete patch material that you can find in the stores easily. Fill in the cracks and then, seal them in place.

The designs and colors create a beautiful and durable surface that is more aesthetically appealing than basic cement or drywall, and more durable and eco-friendly than wood or laminate flooring. Concrete tile patterns add to many design styles including Spanish style home decor, Hacienda, Spanish Colonial, Modern and Contemporary home decor, Beach homes, Mid-Century styles, Industrial and...

These handmade tiles offer natural variations and chips, which are reflections of traditional cement tile. Best for interior floors and walls, these and all cement tiles require sealing. The term encaustic means “to heat or burn in” from an ancient Greek word. Encaustic materials are produced through a process which involves heating to seal in the dyes and clays. Traditional encaustic tiles are made using clay and powdered glazes, and are fired in a coal or wood-fired kiln. The firing process heats the clay and powdered colors to seal in the design and create a hard surface. These types of tiles are technically called ceramic tiles, but many sources and even tile manufacturers have interchangeably referred to them as both ceramic and cement tiles.

Additionally, encaustic tile works best in certain environments. It does not work well in seasonal climates with freeze and thaw cycles because the shift in temperature can cause lifting of the tile. Encaustic cement floor tiles also shouldn’t be used near chemically-treated water, like pool surrounds because the chemicals can fade and damage the design.

This functional, light-filled home takes full advantage of its bucolic site. With the introduction of the butterfly roof, natural light, ventilation and views are brought into the main gathering spaces. Distance between the private and public zones is created by a shift in geometry where those two meet in plan, to provide a calming and rejuvenating private retreat for the occupants. The structured juxtaposition of materials brings order and warmth to the home’s overall experience, complementing the textures and beauty of the site. Photo: ©Cesar Rubio
When we were looking at cement tiles for our kitchen floor, I had major fear of color, even though we went with blue cabinets (which could be painted any other color). The cement tile floor being our biggest investment in our kitchen renovation, we went safe on color by going black and white (but bold on pattern) knowing it would never truly be out of style or clash with anything else in the room.
