I went type A exactly one time while mixing a custom paint color for the upstairs at the old house. It was a big room and I knew it would take two gallons, so I actually measured the paint components. And it worked – I got two gallons of paint that exactly matched each other! (However, if I ever need to do that again, I’ll just use a five gallon bucket do the usual add-color-til-it-looks-good method.)
we continue to expand our offerings and this year, 2018, is no exception with the launch of over twenty new products. we continue to collaborate and create artisan and designer tiles but we are also digging deep and exploring a myriad of surface materials beyond the world of clay-based products. although clé began solely as an online tile store, six years in, we are opening a studio, showroom and a guild where we will teach young artists how to create artful tile and take the craft to a whole new level.
Yes! This is awesome…I had such a hard time finding good cement tiles when I was looking last year! I ended up going with some black and white patterned tiles from Overstock for our fireplace and a small backsplash behind our range. I liked the tiles I picked, but honestly it was the free shipping that sold me – when I priced tiles from other suppliers, the shipping was more than the actual tiles.

Cutting cement tiles takes a bit of extra patience because they’re harder and thicker than the ceramic tiles I’m used to working with.  I found that cutting them face-up allowed for fewer chips on the face of the tile.  When cutting these beauties, you have to be aware of the pattern.  I cut the right and left edges off of 4 tiles.  Then I laid these 3″ strips into the backsplash and called my work done.
Cement tiles, concrete tiles, ceramic tiles, and porcelain tiles… if you’ve started looking into different tile materials, chances are you’ve gotten a bit confused at all of the options and what makes them better or worse. In your search, a term you may have come across is encaustic. What exactly does it mean, and does it apply to cement and ceramic tiles? In this post, we explain the meaning of encaustic for tiles and how it applies to concrete and ceramic tiles. If you have any confusion over this term, or simply how ceramic tiles and cement tiles are made, this post is for you.
Similar to the previous place, it’s a gallery style set up with a vast Arabesque mosaic pattern as the focal point. The reddish-brown earth tone chosen for the walls is the perfect backdrop for the firm’s handcrafted ceramic tile products, and it’s not unlike some of the colors you can find in the Medina of Marrakech. The sea grass flooring, the water feature surrounded by moss, the succulents featured in the soffit niches, the custom made brass lanterns, and the eclectic world music all provide for an almost spa-like experience.

Making the cuts and setting each row took such a long time that I kept having to add more water to the mortar. Even though I had the bucket covered with a wet towel, it dried out quickly. The whole process came to a screeching halt every time I needed to attend to the mortar. I was really wishing for a tiling partner after a few hours into this project. Future tile jobs will be two-person jobs around here.

Whether it’s spills, splashes, or splatters, the kitchen is often on the receiving end of some pretty tough messes. If you’re not careful, you can easily end up with a kitchen covered in food stains and grease spatters, which can lead to a dingy appearance or even lingering odors. In our opinion, the kitchen should be a source of comfort; a place where families and friends can gather around, share a meal, and spend quality time together. We love to see kitchens live up to their potential. That’s why we at Riad love to see our cement tiles being used to create kitchen backsplashes.
Whether you’re designing or remodeling a kitchen, bathroom, living room or bedroom, choosing a flooring material can be daunting. From hardwoods to porcelain and ceramic tile, how do you choose? I have to admit I chuckled a little hearing that it’s national ceramic tile day. Is there anything without a national day? This post is an absolute godsend. There’s about 10 different placed in my home that I want to add ceramic tile to. We have a midcentury raised ranch that is so cookie-cutter-vanilla-suburbia it makes me want to cry. I need to add some (appropriate) spice to this house ASAP!
Outdoors: This is where we are used to seeing cement tiles because it really does wear so nicely over the years. It can get expensive if you are doing a large area or don’t already have a hard surface (concrete) to lay the tiles on, but if you have a small courtyard or a little patio off your bedroom or living room (we can all dream) then cement tile can be just the ticket to create that little bit of visual wow.
Adhesive, tile spacers, notched trowel, bucket, tape measure, grout and grout sponge. Tip: Pick a grout color that complements your tile, avoid an exact color match. Select one that will be easy to keep clean and try to stay away from bright white, unless you love scrubbing. Seal the cement tiles with a penetrating sealer like HydraGuard first. Install it. Then seal the grout. The sealer protects from grout staining. Premixed grout with sealer is not the best, so use with sanded grout and then seal it. It’s a far better process and better protection.

Chips or texture variations may exist. This is normal and not considered a defect for handmade tiles. It is advised to order all cement tile needed for a project. Subsequent orders can come in with shade variations. Samples of colors ordered can vary from actual shading or product received in a final ordered placed. Average lead time for most cement tile orders is approximately 4-8 weeks. Please inquire about current lead times prior to ordering.

Thanks, Julia. I think it feels traditional too. Right now, I think I will just leave the backsplash painted rather than add anything else. I may change my mind down the road. The area behind the sink is actually too narrow for any sort of backsplash at all. There is a window right there, and the apron goes down within an inch or two of the countertop.

but what if I want to use a contrasting or dark grout? using a contrasting or dark grout isn’t impossible, however, it will require GREAT CARE. your installer will need to be extra careful with applying his grout release. next, a test patch should first be attempted to insure that the grout release and the contractor’s application is working. if not, he may need to either finger grout- using his finger to fill the joints, or use a grout bag to assist filling the joints. either procedure will insure that the dark grout stays off the tile surface. but they obviously take a great deal of skill and care.
