Cement tiles were first produced in the South of France in the 1870s. They are known under various names such as Mission tiles, Cuban tiles, Victorian tiles, and hydraulic tiles. Cement tiles are popular in Mediterranean and Latin style spaces and are generally highly patterned with geometric and floral designs. Cement tiles are formed by hand pouring pigmented cement into decorative molds in order to separate the colors. When the cement has been set, the molds are removed and the tile compressed with 2,000 pounds of pressure. The result is an irresistible work of art to create a beautiful kitchen backsplash. Cement tiles are technically concrete tiles since they include aggregates such as marble dust and a layer of sand for reinforcement.
The divider is set into the mold. This is what will separate the colors to create the surface of the concrete tile. Each color is poured into its specific section of the divider. Once each color section is filled, the divider is removed and a mixture of fine sand and Portland cement is applied. This is the second layer and is used as a drier and to reinforce the first layer of the cement tile.
Mosaic House is a New York based tile company specializing in Moroccan zellige (zellij) and encaustic cement tile. We are dedicated to making the centuries old craft traditions of Morocco accessible to our clients. As the newest generation in a centuries old family of tile makers, we draw upon the traditional craft expertise of Morocco, while embracing a modern taste for texture and design. We believe that our continued success is anchored in the four fundamental principles that have always guided us – innovation, the highest quality of material and craftsmanship, a commitment to service, and a focus on the client.
With our Euro partner, Mosaico, we provided the tile for this London England UK kitchen and outdoor terrace. We love the clean, crisp look and how the small kitchen is made so much larger by the extension of the matching outdoor terrace. The client wrote, "We love the tiles so much...You can see we have bi-folding doors that lead into the external courtyard area... in the spring and summertime it really open up our little kitchen. We are very pleased with the result."

We process container orders with load from 20 feet to high cubed containers. Container order turnaround time may vary, depending on the type of products ordered and it can sometimes take up to four months to deliver.  Certain products take our artisans longer to create, thus extending delivery time. Container orders are shipped directly from Morocco.

Just eight months after opening its location on Almont Drive in West Hollywood, the high-end tile company LE MOSAISTE decides to take advantage of a vacancy on nearby Robertson Boulevard to move its showroom. The purpose of the move is clear: added visibility and closer proximity to the Pacific Design Center. “We think the new space will allow us to serve the local design community more effectively”, says co-founder Faissel Farhi.
The Ciment cement floor and wall tile in blue and white sky offers a monochrome blue old-world design set on a white background. These tiles are set on a 1” cement base where color is poured over it into a mold, pressed in a hydraulic press and baked at extremely high temperatures. These handmade tiles offer natural variations and chips, which are reflections of traditional cement tile. Best for interior floors and walls, these and all cement tiles require sealing. Please refer to the sealing...
This series of solid-colored encaustic tiles was created so that there’s always something to perfectly coordinate with any patterned encaustic. Use encaustic black cement tiles alone to make a monochromatic statement or mix and match with other solids and patterns to design a unique room. Even the solid colors of these wall and floor tiles will have natural variation and interest because they are hand mixed before being poured.
When we were looking at cement tiles for our kitchen floor, I had major fear of color, even though we went with blue cabinets (which could be painted any other color). The cement tile floor being our biggest investment in our kitchen renovation, we went safe on color by going black and white (but bold on pattern) knowing it would never truly be out of style or clash with anything else in the room.
If you are remodeling your kitchen and want to get rid of the old tiles without much effort, it is better to invest an overlay. The overlay tiles can easily cover up the old tiles and make your kitchen look brand new. The concrete tile overlay can be a good option to resist damage from salt, chemicals, UV exposure, and abrasion. There is not lack of colors and patterns you want to choose from.

Leaving those beauties stacked in the corner while Garrett finished drywalling was akin to torture.  Okay, that’s probably a little harsh, but I’m just not a patient person when it comes to finishing a kitchen.  It’s only a hair easier than waiting for your baby to arrive after they’ve been cooking for over 41 weeks (not going to happen this time…right baby?!).

The tone of the tiles depends on the aesthetic you want. If you want something rustic, go for dark floors. For that gray toned cement tiles will look great. You can get polished concrete tiles for a smooth finish on the floor and for easy cleaning as well. It is also the better option for commercial purposes. Lighter tones are better if you want a bright home.

Concrete tiles are available in myriad styles and finishes to suit just about any design theme. Of course, you'll find classic smooth concrete tiles that mimic traditional ceramic. But manufacturers also offer organic textures that replicate natural materials such as wood, bamboo, or stone. And for the more daring, you can find many unusual or novel patterns and finishes, including tire tread imprints, cloud patterns, and metallic finishes. In many cases, tile sizes can be custom made to fit the application and space.

When installing tile in your home, you're no longer limited to run-of-the-mill factory-produced ceramic, porcelain, or vinyl floor tiles. A new budget friendly, versatile, and long-lasting alternative is precast concrete tile, custom made for your application. Concrete tile can be used just about anywhere, indoors or out, including floors, walls, fireplace surrounds, pools and patios, shower enclosures, countertops, backsplashes, and building façades. In many cases, concrete tile sizes, finishes, and colors can be customized to suit your design needs.
Does that necessarily make it bad? I grilled the tile pro who did beautiful things with subway and hex tiles in our third floor Airbnb bathroom. James Taylor has been tiling for almost 20 years and there were no ifs, and, or buts when it came to his feelings about cement tile. "I don't even know why it was ever made, to be honest with you," he said.
Many believe that concrete tiles are simply made of cement. However, they are a mixture of multiple ingredients. While the main binding agent is cement, it also includes sand and rocks or crushed stone of different kinds. Different kinds of concrete tiles use different amounts of cement proportion. A right percentage of Portland cement comprises from 10 to 15 percent alkalis, sulfates, and chlorides are what make up the best concrete tiles. Through a process called hydration, a hardening process of cement and water to make concrete gets stronger and continues for years. The strong concrete tiles look like plastic when they are freshly made. However, once they set, they are the hardest and strongest material you’ll ever find.
