What I loved about working with these cement tiles (besides them being fabulous!) is the size. They’re each 8”x8”, which made the install go fast. I did the whole kitchen backsplash in about an hour. After spending two full days laying the marble herringbone backsplash at Ravenna, I was overjoyed by the simplicity of this project. The only added difficulty I found with these tiles was aligning the pattern. It’s not rocket science (I’m looking at you, Jamie), but I did spend a little extra time laying them out. I started by marking a vertical line at the center of the backsplash and then laid the first row beginning with the middle tile and working outwards. After laying the center three tiles all the way to the top of the backsplash and checking that each row was level, it was time to cut the edge tiles.
I love, love the look, but they are high maintenance. I got white and light gray tiles in the bathrooms, definitely do not recommend white or light colored cement tiles. They stain very easily. The installation is also a challange. Like others said, sealing before grouting (once) and more than three times after is a must. First picture shows tiles after less than a year in use. Second pictures shows freshly installed tiles. My husband never wants this tiles again, and we are already thinking of replacing them in the guest bathroom.
clé celebrates this historic cement tile with our own modern take on a 150 year old tile crafting legacy. each encaustic cement tile is painstakingly hand crafted, one tile at a time, to create solid or patterned tiles formed from pigmented cement. the tiles are not fired in a kiln, but are cured in water for a lasting cement surface that is as stunning in its finish as it is good for the environment.
Cement tiles – also known as encaustic tiles - are quickly becoming a trendy design option for home and business owners of all kinds, tastes, and budgets. However modern they may seem, cement tile has been used in homes and shops since the end of the 19th century. Only the wealthiest and most prestigious had cement tiles in their homes and businesses for their superior quality and durability, and for their one-of-a-kind designs. Nowadays, just about anyone can take advantage of the beauty and benefits of this product. If you’re interested in furnishing your home or business with an artisanal, handmade product, then cement tiles from Granada Tile are what you’ve been searching for.

"Creating an emotional connection with the materials is really important as each line has a story that often draws on a long history of experience and tradition. Tile has been used for centuries around the world but here in the U.S. it has been used sparingly and confined mostly to the bathroom and kitchen. Helping people expand their horizons and think of tile in a new way is always one of our goals at clé."

Then I started telling tile installers my plans. And the response from each of them was the same: A concerned look on their faces, the one that says clear as day, "I need to tread carefully here and be sure this person doesn't make a horrible mistake." The sentiment was the same with each as well: They'd do it if I insisted, but I'd be hearing "I told you so," down the road.

With concrete, you can customize the color of your tiles to blend with your décor, such as choosing a shade that complements the wallpaper in your kitchen. Concrete tile manufacturers offer thousands of color options, ranging from soft natural earth tones to vibrant cherry reds. You can go with a uniform color or add more character by dreaming up a custom color blend. Read more about coloring concrete.
You can find concrete tile patterns that fit any room size. You're not limited to standard-sized squares. Although you can certainly recreate the look of tiles with repeating squares, concrete allows more versatility for including cutouts and embeds, imprinted patterns, three-dimensional sculptural designs, and more. Yeah cement tiles might be a strange style for a colonial, but you never know…it could be lovely. Unfortunately my husband had the range hood built and drywalled in a day when I wasn’t at the Dexter House so I don’t have any progress photos for you. He thought a wood hood would be easier to build (like he did at the Ravenna House) but I really wanted the plaster look and in the end, it was really easy to build too. Good luck with your’s – I’d love to see photos!

Inspired by the intricate natural beauty of a spiderweb, the 8" x 9" Blue Widow Hex tile transforms into a work of abstract art when it’s installed on your walls or floors. Cobalt and sky blues naturally create a calming effect, perfect for spa-inspired bathrooms. The geometric design of this encaustic tile comes alive as a diamond motif lending modern appeal to entryways, kitchens, bathrooms and more.
since our beginning at clé, we have become known for our tile collaborations with artists and designers, however, it is our long-term aim to broaden everyone's concept of tile and to transform it from being a functional backdrop to a more artful, provocative facet of our surroundings. to that end we have sought out heirloom quality tiles from across the globe. our tile offerings now extend from classic moroccan zellige (which we helped put on the map in the US), glazed raku-fired tiles from Vietnam, rustic italian terracotta and carrara stone to thin clay bricks domestically sourced.
If this tile reminds you of a flashy belt buckle, you’re not imagining things. The design of the Swashbuckler was actually inspired by the shape of a belt, loop and buckle. This idea was then transformed into an abstract design consisting of concentric ovals in tonal greys and featuring a central diamond design. Make a statement on your walls or floors with this unique encaustic tile.
The craftsman house involved in the project is over 100 years old. It’s a brown shingle craftsman very typical of the local homes and the owners are bringing it back to life little by little. The owners are both wonderful cooks (she’s French so of course!) and spend a lot of time in their well-used kitchen. The home was updated sometime in the 80’s and was ready for a serious face-lift. The clients wanted to incorporate a French/Moroccan style with the architectural elements of a craftsman. We think they succeeded!
i love these ideas and appreciate the impressive amount of work that went into researching all of it. ironically, i am right now (as in…NOW, today) removing heavily patterned tile from the bathrooms in my 1970’s “spanish” (subdivision…ranch) house. the tiles have held up beautifully for 42 years, but yowza. living with the patterns on floors and walls day after day can be crazy-making over time. plus, the colorways are self-limiting — the tile demands center stage. i will replace the patterned tiles with plain cement tiles and go crazy with towels.
Jordan Design-Build Group is a full-service residential design-build firm serving the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area. For a recent remodel project a client wanted to go big and bold in the kitchen whilst maintaining an eclectic style. Using our Patchwork Random selection of colorful cement tiles, they created a ceiling-high backsplash that acts as the focal point of the room. (All photos © 2015 Stacy Zarin-Goldberg Photography.)
I went type A exactly one time while mixing a custom paint color for the upstairs at the old house. It was a big room and I knew it would take two gallons, so I actually measured the paint components. And it worked – I got two gallons of paint that exactly matched each other! (However, if I ever need to do that again, I’ll just use a five gallon bucket do the usual add-color-til-it-looks-good method.)
