Making the cuts and setting each row took such a long time that I kept having to add more water to the mortar. Even though I had the bucket covered with a wet towel, it dried out quickly. The whole process came to a screeching halt every time I needed to attend to the mortar. I was really wishing for a tiling partner after a few hours into this project. Future tile jobs will be two-person jobs around here.

With concrete, you can customize the color of your tiles to blend with your décor, such as choosing a shade that complements the wallpaper in your kitchen. Concrete tile manufacturers offer thousands of color options, ranging from soft natural earth tones to vibrant cherry reds. Outdoors: This is where we are used to seeing cement tiles because it really does wear so nicely over the years. It can get expensive if you are doing a large area or don’t already have a hard surface (concrete) to lay the tiles on, but if you have a small courtyard or a little patio off your bedroom or living room (we can all dream) then cement tile can be just the ticket to create that little bit of visual wow.
Since it is just not cement, a concrete tile offers various features like durability, easier cleaning and maintenance. With regular cleaning, it is fairly easy to maintain the durability. It is recommended to use clean water and microfiber mop each time. You can mix water with neutral cleansers to avoid abrasion of the tile. For long-term maintenance, it is better to invest in resealing of the tiles when it is required.

The craftsman house involved in the project is over 100 years old. It’s a brown shingle craftsman very typical of the local homes and the owners are bringing it back to life little by little. The owners are both wonderful cooks (she’s French so of course!) and spend a lot of time in their well-used kitchen. The home was updated sometime in the 80’s and was ready for a serious face-lift. The clients wanted to incorporate a French/Moroccan style with the architectural elements of a craftsman. We think they succeeded!

Historically more common throughout Europe than here, they've gathered major steam on this side of the pond. After days and weeks of scouring the internet looking for the perfect tile for our bathroom renovation, and not finding anything that was just right, late one night I finally found The One in a photo of a dreamy bathroom.
