Months ago, when Andy and I were considering a complete gut-renovation of the kitchen in BHH, I started to do some poking around on Pinterest and pinning favorites on our kitchen ideas board. I noticed a trend in most of my choices. I like decorative tile.  That surprised me. Initially, I really only considered white subway tile.  It is clean, classic, and easy to find.  It would bridge the decorating gap between our 1800s home and a new modern kitchen.  However, once I saw all of the beautiful tile choices available, I could not get the idea of something with a lot more punch than subway tile out of my head.

so this friday, on the perch of the future, clé is committing to the bigger question with our promise of smaller ongoing actions that we trust when woven together will make for bigger results. today, we commit to trying our best to support the greater whole. we commit to not turning away from the harder questions. we commit to sharing ourselves and our resources with those in need. we commit to using our talents to better the world around us. we commit to being better people. we commit to acting out of love and not hate.

This series of solid-colored encaustic tiles was created so that there’s always something to perfectly coordinate with any patterned encaustic. Use encaustic sky-blue cement tiles alone to make a monochromatic statement or mix and match with other solids and patterns to design a unique room. Even the solid colors of these wall and floor tiles will have natural variation and interest because they are hand mixed before being poured.
Tiles are a great material to include in your kitchen remodel or refresh and they’re one of the most visually stunning and practical products you can find. You can place them on the floors for a durable foundation for the high traffic area, and on the backsplash to make clean-up easier and faster. If you’re planning a total renovation of your kitchen, then be sure to include tile in your plans. And if you’re simply wanting to spruce up an outdated kitchen, start with the backsplash and look at the many tile options before you head right to other more expensive changes. Kitchen backsplash tile is a small and easy way to instantly change the entire look and feel of your kitchen.
The apparent simplicity of the Rogue Hex encaustic tile is deceptive. Inspired by tessellations, or repeated, close-fitting polygons, the diamonds and triangles on this hexagon tile can be flipped in different directions to create cubes and other geometric designs. Design a chic black-and-white accent wall or entryway floor with timeless style using 8" x 9" Rogue encaustics.
Since it is just not cement, a concrete tile offers various features like durability, easier cleaning and maintenance. With regular cleaning, it is fairly easy to maintain the durability. It is recommended to use clean water and microfiber mop each time. You can mix water with neutral cleansers to avoid abrasion of the tile. For long-term maintenance, it is better to invest in resealing of the tiles when it is required.

the polishing is completed with a light penetrating sealer that allows the tiles to ship without the abrasion issues that are prevalent when shipping pigmented tiles. this sealant also assists through the first stages of installation (setting and pre-grouting). we keep the sealant light so that it doesn't act as a bond barrier for the setting material. this is why we require additional sealant prior to grouting (to help prevent grout staining).

this has been a constant theme at clé. and recently, we’ve been asking ourselves this question, not just in the way we select our products, support our artists, work with our clients and engage with our team mates. but we’ve also been asking ourselves the bigger question- how can we make a difference every day for one another, in our communities and in our world.
We also regret using cement tiles. They look great on day 1, but even properly sealed they stain. We are very careful with our tiles, but inevitably something will happen. Once we accidentally dripped toilet bowl cleaner on the floor and they literally bleached the tile, even though it was cleaned immediately. Also, we have a floating toilet and there is a definite urine stain below the bowl for all the times guests "miss". This does not come out even with some good scrubbing. The recommended solution for stains is to sand and reseal the floor. I don't mind a "lived in" look, but I certainly don't like pee stains and drip marks from each time I accidentally spill something. And I am certainly not planning to sand and seal my bathroom floor every one or two years, per the manufacturers suggestions.

I was super exciting. The moment I entered I felt welcomed. They had a great selection, beautiful designs, great colors to choose from. I decided to go with intricate Fassi design tiles, which represented the true Moroccan beauty as well as it would brighten up my kitchen. For the flooring, the Sala sheets composed of 2x2 inch Moroccan tiles in the color bone looked remarkable.

i love these ideas and appreciate the impressive amount of work that went into researching all of it. ironically, i am right now (as in…NOW, today) removing heavily patterned tile from the bathrooms in my 1970’s “spanish” (subdivision…ranch) house. the tiles have held up beautifully for 42 years, but yowza. living with the patterns on floors and walls day after day can be crazy-making over time. plus, the colorways are self-limiting — the tile demands center stage. i will replace the patterned tiles with plain cement tiles and go crazy with towels.
I have to admit I chuckled a little hearing that it’s national ceramic tile day. Is there anything without a national day? This post is an absolute godsend. There’s about 10 different placed in my home that I want to add ceramic tile to. We have a midcentury raised ranch that is so cookie-cutter-vanilla-suburbia it makes me want to cry. I need to add some (appropriate) spice to this house ASAP!

Side note: Using a blade attachment on your power drill makes the job of mixing mortar easy, but be careful. The first few times I tried to mix the mortar, the blade was so powerful that it spun the bucket and slammed it into my shins. In order to keep this from happening again, I wedged the bucket between the front steps and my sneakers. Even then, it took a lot of muscle to hold it in place.

On the recommendation of the flooring guy at Lowe’s, I bought this sealer. He and I actually had a bit of a difference of opinion. He thought the cement tile was already sealed. I felt pretty certain that it was not. I am glad that I went with my gut because the cement tile backsplash sucked up the sealer like nobody’s business. It took four layers before the tile stopped soaking up the sealer like a desert reptile soaks up rain. (Novice tip: If you have unsealed tile, sealing it prior to grouting is important. The pigment in colored grout can stain unsealed tile.)

Unless your backyard space is livable and inviting, you probably don’t spend as much time in it as you’d like. The key to making a backyard more comfortable is to create a living space that brings the indoors, out. Our favorite way to do this? Tile a space in the backyard with durable and beautiful cement floor tiles. Add in comfortable furniture and an outdoor fireplace or an outdoor kitchen, and you’ve got a recipe for the ultimate backyard living space. Learn all the ways cement tiles are great for an outdoor living space, why they are better than pavers and poured concrete, and some ideas for how to bring them into your backyard.
The term encaustic means “to heat or burn in” from an ancient Greek word. Encaustic materials are produced through a process which involves heating to seal in the dyes and clays. Traditional encaustic tiles are made using clay and powdered glazes, and are fired in a coal or wood-fired kiln. The firing process heats the clay and powdered colors to seal in the design and create a hard surface. These types of tiles are technically called ceramic tiles, but many sources and even tile manufacturers have interchangeably referred to them as both ceramic and cement tiles.
Hand painted and hand poured tiles are very different from each other and are actually completely different types of tile. While ceramic tiles are hand painted with glazes and pigments, cement tiles are hand poured with the design set into the tile itself. This difference is what makes cement tiles so much more durable and long-lasting than ceramic tiles. But that’s not all cement tiles are good for. They offer many more benefits and can be used in a number of ways both in and outside your home or business. Learn more about the features and benefits of handmade cement tiles here.
