On the recommendation of the flooring guy at Lowe’s, I bought this sealer. He and I actually had a bit of a difference of opinion. He thought the cement tile was already sealed. I felt pretty certain that it was not. I am glad that I went with my gut because the cement tile backsplash sucked up the sealer like nobody’s business. It took four layers before the tile stopped soaking up the sealer like a desert reptile soaks up rain. (Novice tip: If you have unsealed tile, sealing it prior to grouting is important. The pigment in colored grout can stain unsealed tile.)

Does that necessarily make it bad? I grilled the tile pro who did beautiful things with subway and hex tiles in our third floor Airbnb bathroom. James Taylor has been tiling for almost 20 years and there were no ifs, and, or buts when it came to his feelings about cement tile. "I don't even know why it was ever made, to be honest with you," he said.

Then it was my turn! This was my first time installing cement tiles and I found it to be…well…pretty easy. I used an acrylic, pre-mixed tile adhesive (mostly because I’m lazy and HATE mixing up mortar) and a trowel with large teeth. Per the tile manufacturer’s instructions, I cleaned the back of each tile prior to laying them on the adhesive. Cement tiles are heavier than any tiles I’ve worked with before, so I put extra care into making sure the backing was evenly applied with large grooves from the trowel. I don’t want any of these suckers popping off the wall and falling into a pot of stew when I finally get the chance to cook in this kitchen!
We are thrilled that the show used our Bouquet II pattern in an episode of this season’s show. The episode is titled “Arched Mediterranean Kitchen” (Season 11, Episode 2) and follows a couple as they get a complete kitchen renovation. Our handmade cement tile is used on the kitchen backsplash to create a unique centerpiece for the space. The Bouquet cement tile pattern blends in perfectly with the new kitchen’s Mediterranean theme.
Handmade by artisans using ancient techniques, glazed Moroccan tiles (known as zellige) are fashioned from organic regional clay and glaze pigments. Because they are hand cut, they feature a distinctive, imperfect profile, which enhances their rustic character and adds a note of exotica to kitchens, baths, fireplace surrounds. Below are a few ideas for sourcing the tiles.

Another important note he left was where I was supposed to start laying the first row. The range we chose slides in and fits up snugly against the wall. I needed to account for that by starting the tile 7/8″ above the Silestone countertop. Otherwise, the range would not slide in all the way, and the mounting brackets would not set flush with the edge of the countertop. In other words, it would look like a bad DIY job.

Anyway…back to the tiles. Garrett really wanted to inset the backsplash into the wall so the edges of the tile would be concealed by the surrounding drywall. I wasn’t really concerned about seeing the tile edges, but I let him go after it anyway ‘cause marriage is all about compromise. And I like to compromise on the small stuff ;). So Garrett put up 1/4″ hardiboard behind the backsplash and 5/8″ drwyall around it. He pushed out the drywall immediately on either side of the hardiboard with 1/8″ furring strips so I had a solid 3/4″ of depth to work with for laying the mortar and tile.
if you are expecting perfect tiles- then cement tiles may not be for you. cement tiles are created from cement and natural pigments. this, alone, creates tiles of extreme variation of color, pattern, shade and size. additionally, each tile is made by hand- one tile at a time. if your project requires beautiful hand made variation that is perfectly imperfect, then cement tiles will be good for your project.
Yes! This is awesome…I had such a hard time finding good cement tiles when I was looking last year! I ended up going with some black and white patterned tiles from Overstock for our fireplace and a small backsplash behind our range. I liked the tiles I picked, but honestly it was the free shipping that sold me – when I priced tiles from other suppliers, the shipping was more than the actual tiles.

Since it is just not cement, a concrete tile offers various features like durability, easier cleaning and maintenance. With regular cleaning, it is fairly easy to maintain the durability. It is recommended to use clean water and microfiber mop each time. You can mix water with neutral cleansers to avoid abrasion of the tile. For long-term maintenance, it is better to invest in resealing of the tiles when it is required.
The First Layer: The wear layer, also called the concrete tile face, is a mixture of highly resistant Portland white cement, powdered white marble and natural pigments. Wear resistance, color and brightness rely on the quality of this layer. The finished encaustic tile has the natural finish surface and these hand-crafted floor tiles can be sealed or polished.
If you've seen some drop dead gorgeous patterned tiles on Pinterest lately, there's a good chance they are made of cement. These matte-finish, often bold patterned tiles are absolutely beautiful. Historically more common throughout Europe than here, they've gathered major steam on this side of the pond. After days and weeks of scouring the internet looking for the perfect tile for our bathroom renovation, and not finding anything that was just right, late one night I finally found The One in a photo of a dreamy bathroom.
Being situated in the building right next to the John Varvatos store and across the street from glitzy Italian restaurant Cecconi’s (just south of Melrose & Robertson), the company’s new showroom can certainly be considered prime real estate. Not only is it quite a bit easier to find, but it has more square footage and wall space than its predecessor, allowing for more sample board displays. For close to 20 years the space was home to Trigg Ison Fine Art, one of West Hollywood’s top art galleries.
The tone of the tiles depends on the aesthetic you want. If you want something rustic, go for dark floors. For that gray toned cement tiles will look great. You can get polished concrete tiles for a smooth finish on the floor and for easy cleaning as well. It is also the better option for commercial purposes. Lighter tones are better if you want a bright home.

Outdoors: This is where we are used to seeing cement tiles because it really does wear so nicely over the years. It can get expensive if you are doing a large area or don’t already have a hard surface (concrete) to lay the tiles on, but if you have a small courtyard or a little patio off your bedroom or living room (we can all dream) then cement tile can be just the ticket to create that little bit of visual wow.
Then I started telling tile installers my plans. And the response from each of them was the same: A concerned look on their faces, the one that says clear as day, "I need to tread carefully here and be sure this person doesn't make a horrible mistake." The sentiment was the same with each as well: They'd do it if I insisted, but I'd be hearing "I told you so," down the road.
