Many homeowners prefer subdued neutral tones in their kitchen, to ensure that it will remain beautiful and up-to-date for a long time. However, neutral colors don’t have to mean plain and boring; you can choose a cement backsplash tile pattern in a neutral tone, like off-white or gray, and enjoy a unique pattern and texture without overwhelming the space with bright colors.
No, cement tiles are not truly encaustic, but it is an acceptable label for cement tiles, also known as inlaid tiles. When cement tiles were first introduced during the mid-1800s, the Victorians thought they looked just like encaustic tiles which have been around for centuries, and mistakenly started referring to them as encaustic tiles also. Since then, the term has been widely used interchangeably to describe these two tile art forms.
Outdoors: This is where we are used to seeing cement tiles because it really does wear so nicely over the years. It can get expensive if you are doing a large area or don’t already have a hard surface (concrete) to lay the tiles on, but if you have a small courtyard or a little patio off your bedroom or living room (we can all dream) then cement tile can be just the ticket to create that little bit of visual wow.

What I loved about working with these cement tiles (besides them being fabulous!) is the size.  They’re each 8”x8”, which made the install go fast.  I did the whole kitchen backsplash in about an hour.  After spending two full days laying the marble herringbone backsplash at Ravenna, I was overjoyed by the simplicity of this project.  The only added difficulty I found with these tiles was aligning the pattern.  It’s not rocket science (I’m looking at you, Jamie), but I did spend a little extra time laying them out.  I started by marking a vertical line at the center of the backsplash and then laid the first row beginning with the middle tile and working outwards.  After laying the center three tiles all the way to the top of the backsplash and checking that each row was level, it was time to cut the edge tiles.

Bathrooms: I just installed these tiles from Erin Adams design in my own bathroom and my search for those is what started this whole thing. Most cement tiles will work either on the floor or walls of your bathroom, but check with the manufacturer as some tiles will need to be sealed before they get a lot of foot traffic and water on them. Again, seal them after install and ideally keep sealing every couple years as needed.
what colors are suitable for grouting cement tiles? clé always recommends a neutral natural grey (un-pigmented) grout color for all cement tiles. besides being the traditional shade for these historic tiles, the lack of pigment allows for a stain-free installation. another color recommendation is to select the shade that matches closest to the lightest shade in your pattern. CAUTION: many grout manufacturers have begun to pigment their “natural gray” grouts. so be sure your contractor checks with the manufacturer. If there is pigment, your contractor must take care against staining.

Besides the varying manufacturing processes, you may wonder about the biggest differences between encaustic cement and ceramic tiles and why you would choose one over the other. Encaustic cement tiles and ceramic tiles both come in countless patterns and color combinations. They often feature designs inspired by different cultures and architectural influences. They are also both used in many types of projects, from kitchen backsplashes to floors to outdoor spaces to decorative wall features.
Making the cuts and setting each row took such a long time that I kept having to add more water to the mortar. Even though I had the bucket covered with a wet towel, it dried out quickly. The whole process came to a screeching halt every time I needed to attend to the mortar. I was really wishing for a tiling partner after a few hours into this project. Future tile jobs will be two-person jobs around here.

The tile you’re probably most used to seeing is ceramic tile, but we want to redirect your focus to another type of tile that has the same beauty but comes with many more benefits. Cement tile is made from an entirely different process than ceramic tiles, with a hard-wearing mixture of mineral powder, cement, sand, and color pigment. It is compressed with about 2,000 pounds of hydraulic pressure, and the design becomes a part of the tile, not simply glazed or painted on the surface. Ceramic tiles are made with clays and glazes and are fired in kilns and don’t offer the same level of resiliency. Cement tiles have proven to be more durable and long-lasting than ceramic tiles and show less wear and tear over time. Backsplash cement tiles are also water-resistant and stain-resistant when sealed properly.

Love cement tiles – have them in my guest bath and fireplace surround – but those puppies are hard to seal properly. Make sure you’ve got somebody who knows what they’re doing. In the bathroom, first guy made a giant mess of the job – specialist had to come in, scrape the bad sealer off and reseal – they ended up with a bit more of a rustic, distressed finish, but it works OK with the style of my house (kinda like Emily’s cloent’s kitchen)
Capture the beauty of authentic, traditional cement tiles with the Ciment Artea 7.88" x 7.88" Cement Field Tile. These tiles are constructed of cement, offering a partial through-body coloring. Anyway…back to the tiles.  Garrett really wanted to inset the backsplash into the wall so the edges of the tile would be concealed by the surrounding drywall.  I wasn’t really concerned about seeing the tile edges, but I let him go after it anyway ‘cause marriage is all about compromise.  And I like to compromise on the small stuff ;).  So Garrett put up 1/4″ hardiboard behind the backsplash and 5/8″ drwyall around it.  He pushed out the drywall immediately on either side of the hardiboard with 1/8″ furring strips so I had a solid 3/4″ of depth to work with for laying the mortar and tile.
This series of solid-colored encaustic tiles was created so that there’s always something to perfectly coordinate with any patterned encaustic. Use encaustic light-grey cement tiles alone to make a monochromatic statement or mix and match with other solids and patterns to design a unique room. Even the solid colors of these wall and floor tiles will have natural variation and interest because they are hand mixed before being poured.
The bathroom is another place where cement tile backsplash can brighten the room. In our last blog post, we touched on how our cement tile patterns can bring lasting character to your bathroom in unexpected and exciting ways that you may not have thought of before (check out our use of Havana cement tile for a shower in our last blog post). You may not have thought of using cement tile backsplash for the bathroom before. We think cement tile backsplash in a bathroom is a must have that will suit any style. What is the current character of your bathroom? Does it match what you want it to be? If you’re interested in subtle and suave, our Fleur cement tile could be just what your bathroom needs. Or, if you’re looking for a pop of color, take a look at our El Fenn Blue cement tile.
Any chance you’re going to show some in process shots of building your range hood? Yours looks exactly like the shape I want to build. I’ve been promising a range hood in the kitchen for years and I have the fan and liner in the basement now but haven’t added the electrical or decided on the exact design. I love the idea of plaster or tile but keep thinking I should do painted wood because it will be easier.
LE MOSAISTE teamed up with interior designer and new neighbor Paul L’Esperance (www.lesperancedesign.com), best known for his award-winning work on the 22 million dollar restoration of The Leland Stanford Mansion. The joint effort took the design of the new showroom into a direction that complements the elegant and organic qualities of the company’s artisan zellige tiles. The idea behind the décor was to pay tribute to the origin of the tiles while hinting at their versatility. The term that comes to mind is “Moroccan modern”.
Next roundup idea: super-slender console tables! You know how sometimes you need something that doesn’t have a big footprint, in a narrow older hallway or odd room? I’d love to see a roundup of consoles that are less than a foot deep, and bonus points if you include some that have storage and aren’t just gorgeous expensive art-furniture that I can’t cram wet gloves into.
It starts with installation, he said. "It's really inconsistent in size and that makes installation take longer because you're trying to make up for the size difference. It's not symmetrical in any way, shape, or form." When it comes to grouting, even with using sealing products to prevent issues, "Oh my goodness it's a pain—it's so porous, it sucks the pigment of the grout in and it's hard to get it off," he said.
Items that state "ships within 10-12 weeks" are made to order, with the 10-12 weeks being the production time. We are not able to expedite the production time as each tile is produced by hand one at a time and then requires time to fully cure so they do not break while in transit. After this 10- 12 week period the order will ship from our warehouse and transit time should be 1-7 business days.

we recommend using our unglazed tile grout. our timberwolf is natural grey in color and has the least amount of pigment. steer clear of permacolor grouts that will stain the tile. ideally tile spacing should be set at 1/16 inch - as tight as possible - to keep the pattern flow. for any cement tile we always recommend miracle's 511 porous plus as a sealant.

At Granada Tile, we offer traditional encaustic floor tiles made with both bright  and subtle colors and intricate patterns as well as bold geometric designs and clean lines.
why do you caution against using permacolor grouts? Permacolor grouts are the newest iteration of grout development. it’s really great for color-fast qualities, however everything that makes it color fast is a demon to your beautiful cement tiles. first, the grout is colored with more intense pigments that will stain any unglazed stone, cement or unglazed tile. second, it is fast drying and less viscous than standard grouts and therefore there is a greater possibility of leaving a grout film. should grout film develop on your installation, it is generally irreparable.
