Seattle-based Amazon officially opened a 520,000-square-foot “sort centre” in Coteau-du-Lac on Wednesday. It’s the second such building in Quebec for the retailer, which opened a 360,000-square-foot facility in St-Hubert last year. Employees at these centres sort customer orders by final destination and send them out to the company’s delivery stations.

Signing bonuses will be paid once new recruits have been with Amazon for 90 days, site leader Anamaria Zammit said Wednesday. Salaries start at $17.60 to $18.10 an hour, and twice-vaccinated staffers will receive a one-time $100 payment, she added. Quebec’s minimum wage is $13.50 an hour.

“Everybody’s struggling to hire these days,” Zammit told the Montreal Gazette in a phone interview. “You see hiring signs all over Montreal, all over the region, all over the province. What we’re trying to do here is to give our associates the best that we can offer them. We have very competitive salaries and benefits that start from Day 1. People can come in and know that they’re fully covered.”
