Fears over “worst ever” Covid variant as UK bans flights from southern Africa – BBC News

Scientists are warning that a new Coronavirus variant is the “worst” they have seen. The B.1.1.529 variant has mutations which mean it may evade immunity built up by previous Covid infection or vaccination.

Cases have been detected in southern Africa and also in Hong Kong.

The UK is temporarily banning flights from six countries in southern Africa – Botswana, South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Eswatini and placing them on its Red List – meaning any passengers who do arrive must quarantine.

Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by medical editor Fergus Walsh, political correspondent Nick Eardley and Africa correspondent Andrew Harding.

  1. The new variant isn't "from" South Africa-it was undefined_in_South Africa, where we have the best scientists in the world at this stuff. In part because of the decades combatting HIV.It's highly unlikely from here, and almost definitely in the UK already.

  2. Fear being a great word when for 2 years absolutely nothing has changed in most of our lives. That's all it is, fear and manipulation and obviously you're not capable of making your own safety decisions.

  3. How do we know that the variant wasn’t imported from the same countries that were quick to close their boarders on Southern African countries? Something fishy going on.🤔 Their response is suspicious.

  4. Funny how it’s gone from 10k+ down- are that many people deleting their comments or are the bbc and YouTube at it again?🤔 so much for freedom of expression. You watch- they’ll remove the comment section next
