Group of five targets Tanforan Mall jewelry store in smash-and-grab robbery

SAN BRUNO — A group of five men is at large after they robbed a jewelry store inside the Tanforan Mall Monday afternoon, according to authorities.

A smash-and-grab robbery was reported at 1:06 p.m. and San Bruno police responded to the 1100 block of El Camino Real, according to a San Bruno Police Department news release. Officers said a group of five men approached a jewelry store inside the mall and one pulled out a crowbar. The owner of the store yelled at them to stop but the man smashed a glass case and raised the crowbar at the store owner “as if to hit him,” police said.

The store owner, who has a concealed carry permit, drew a gun and pointed it at the man, according to authorities. The man ran to the food court area while another man in the group pulled out a gun and pointed it at the owner, who raised his own gun and pointed it at the man.

The remaining four men ran towards the JC Penny department store and fled through the front of the mall, police said. There were no injuries reported. The suspects are described as men in their teens to early 20s.

An undisclosed amount of merchandise was stolen, according to authorities.
