World Traveling Pilar Cyst Part 1

A pilar cyst, also known as a trichilemmal or isthmus-catagen cyst, is a benign (non-life-threatening) growth that, upon examination, looks identical to the more common epidermoid cyst, except that 90% of pilar cysts occur on the scalp. They tend to be more mobile and firmer than epidermoid cysts, and are derived from a different part of the hair follicle. The internal contents tend to be more “homogenous” and smooth. It is not uncommon to have multiple pilar cysts on the scalp and for the condition to run in families. Treatment is generally only for cosmetic reasons and excision with removal of the cyst and its contents is curative. The nice thing about these cysts is that they are often thicker-walled, so they can often be “popped” out whole, which not only ensures that I’ve removed it completely, but also leads to an extremely satisfying “pop!”

  1. I'm curious. They couldn't find a doctor in India to remove those? And suddenly during the pandemic she decides now these need to be removed? And this was the United States letting someone in from India during the Delta variant of covid? I'm just confused about the timing and the travel distance for something that doctors in India should have handled. And I understand that physicians were extremely overwhelmed this past summer in India so I am considering that as a factor but I keep going back to now she decides this must be dealt with. Just seems very risky for them but if they got vaccinated while they were here I fully support and understand the driving motivation. Otherwise I just don't understand the risks they took for something that's been going on and it's not life threatening to have these Pilar cyst but the Delta variant of covid could possibly be life threatening.
And her husband was accurate be grateful that they had the means to travel across the world to deal with this being that most of India live in extreme poverty. And I suspect they are well off and very fortunate to be able to travel abroad for medical care when Americans die here because they can't afford medical care. I think India has for the most part socialized medical system but I have also understood it to not be socialized so I am confused about their medical system. Either way they are very fortunate people. I'm glad they were able to get her issues resolved and I really hope they took advantage of the vaccine while they were in the states. If so many Americans want to be ridiculous about the vaccine we might as well work on saving the world with the vaccine for people who most likely will never have access to it and as the correct humanitarian thing to do is help take care of suffering in less fortunate countries.

  2. Dr. Lee I love your videos but can you not compare cysts to food because when you do that it makes me never wanna eat that food that you mention ever again. Like today you said potatoes and I love potatoes. 😫😫 thanks for making potatoes feel so gross to me 🤮🤮😫😫😫
